I got my new e-Bay dial back timing light in the mail yesterday (yay), but it didn't come with instructions. It has the dial on the back for advance degrees, but how do I use this on the car? I know how to hook it up, but how do I use the dial back fuction?

If the dial is set to 0, then its read just like any normal timing light. When mark is seen at 0deg mark on timing mark tab, engine is at 0 degrees advance.

When the dial is set to, say 5deg, and the mark is at 0deg on the timing mark tab, engine is at 5 deg advance. 10 deg on the dial, mark at 0 on engine, 10 degrees advanced, etc

Yep. If you want to set the initial timing set to 10BTDC, turn the dial to 10. Rotate the distributer until the timing mark lines up to 0. Tighten up distributer and there you go. To check total timing, turn dial to where you want it (32 degrees for example) and rev up engine to where ever it stops advancing. Adjust timing as needed to get desired total. Again, when you get it right, the timing mark on the balencer will line up with 0 on the tab on the timing chain cover. Have fun!

Okay, sounds simple enough. I just can't make the connection of how the timing guns knows when the engine is at the specified degree of advance. It seems like the gun would need an internal tachometer and would need to know the number of cylinders. As long as it works I don't care, I just don't get how it works.

Anyway, thanks for the instructions! :D

Every time the light is triggered the engine has rotated 360 degrees. A fairly simple timing circuit would be all that is needed to complete the puzzle.

What. doesn't everyone run a Saab engine?
