The car has not been running of a few years ,, is there a way to bench test the lsd unit.

If you see newspaper taxis at the shore, waiting to take you away to the rocking-horse people with looking-glass ties as you drift past the flowers that grow so incredibly high, then your LSD is working.

One crude but simple test is to jack up the rear of the car, block the driveshaft from turning (automatic trans in park, manual trans in 1st) and turn one of the rear wheels. If the other wheel turns the same direction, then your sure-grip is working at least to some degree. If the other wheel turns the opposite direction, the sure-grip's not working.

Another test is to jack-up one side and try to get the one wheel to turn. ( with trans in neutral, I use a "star bar" on a lug nut to get more grip) If you can get one wheel to turn with low effort, that tells you the the clutch or cones in the sure grip unit are worn.

Are you sure about the wheel turning in the same direction?
I would think that if the driveshaft was not turning and your were able to get both wheel turning in the same direction that would mean your ring and or pinion is broken.
I think the other wheel will always turn the opposite direction. It just of matter of how much effort it takes.

I'd love to, but I can't remember!
And now that I think of it, perhaps for the "both wheels one direction" test, the driveshaft must be unlocked.

just go out to a backstreet and see how many black stripes you leave.

you want both wheels turning in the same direction because that means that the "limited slip" differential is doing its job. it is limiting slip and making sure sure both wheels are recieving power.
