Post subject:  1968 carb rebuild

I got a '68 Dart with 58,000 miles. The car is all original exept for the
master cylendr I replaced.

I think the carb needs a rebuild because it balks (sometimes quits) when
I accelerate from a stop.

This is very noticable in cold weather. If I let the engine warm up the problem is also less noticable.

I have had other carburated cars with similar symptoms (failing accelrator
pump).

Does this carb need a complete rebuild or just a new accelerator pump?

If I do have to rebuild the carb, how hard is it to do? (special tools, specs, ect).

Thanks in advance

Hello and welcome! I would check your accellerator pump and your choke settings. I would also check to be surte the the choke is properly hooked up and working, and that your choke pulloff diaphragm isn't ruptured.

The choke is working, I don't have the problem when the choke is on or
when it is stepping down. It happens when the choke comes all the way
off but the manifold has not reached normal operating temp.

Well, this could be caused by numerous things. The ones that come immediately to mind are: (1) choke is coming off too quick (misadjusted chopke); (2) car is coming off fast idle too quick (misadjusted fast idle linkage); (3) vacuum leak (check your hoses, intake to cylinder head gasket, and the choke pulloff diaphragm); (4) misadjusted timing; (5) misadjusted valves; (6) faulty float.

Does this car have power brakes? Have you checked the points and dwell settings lately?

(7) Carburetor internally dirty and/or leaky and/or faulty; (8) Manifold heat control valve stuck in "heat off" position; (9) Blown distributor vacuum advance pod diaphragm
