Yesterday I found myself with to much money in my pocket and a muffler on my Satellite that sounded like it fell off when it got wet. So, I decided it was time for a new muffler. Drove to my favorite exhaust shop and had Dave put a Magnaflow XL muffler on. I was going to go with a 2.25 exhaust also, but he said my 2" was fine for a stock engine and driving I do (80 mile round trip freeway commute). So he saved me 250 bucks. Anyway, its a nice sounding muffler. Nice, throaty sound at idle and noticable outside but quite in the car around town. It gets a little noticable inside on the freeway, but not as bad as a glasspack I used to have (lasted a month), though it did get kinda loud over 70 (over 3000rpm). Very pleased, though it was expensive at $120 installed.

On a side note, wife and I went to a casino last night and walked in with 120 bucks to spend, and walked out with almost triple that, so in a way I got the muffler free! :mrgreen:

Cool! Can't beat free money! 8) I agree, unless you switch to a two barrel carb or install bigger valves or a bigger cam two inches is plenty.

Don't know what the "XL" signifies; my experience with a Magnaflow was that it sounded terrific, just as you describe, for a month or two, then it started getting progressively louder. Perhaps they've solved that problem? Donno. Will be interested to learn of your ongoing experience.

I've had my Magnaflows now for about two months and haven't noticed that they've gotten any louder. If they have, it hasn't really been noticeable. I really like the way they sound.

Just an FYI for those reading this thread. The Magnaflow XL is a turbo style muffler not straight through. Looks like the 2.25 entry/exit XL mufflers have a core of 2.5 inch with three distinct chambers.

Eric,

What is the number on your muffler?
13234 or 13264?
In other words did you get the 14" long body or the 18" long body?

I am thinking of going that route but the muffler shop said the 18" body would be better. They said if I really wanted it quiet they would put a 24" long resonator back by the gas tank.

Did he say the XL series is quieter and cheaper than the straight through series?

My wife wants to take the Dart over the Rockies to Glacier National Park and wants it quiet.......

How much did he charge for the muffler? no labor.....

I've had a Magnaflow on my Dakota for a few years now. I don't believe it has gotten any louder, but I may be getting deafer. :shock:

I've had the muffler for over 3 years now and it still sounds the same. Ted, I believe mine is the larger unit. I think he charged me 89 bucks for it. I drove the Satellite for the first time in a couple weeks Saturday, and it was quiter than the old turbo type muffler on the 5th Ave, thats for sure!

While I can see that a turbo muffler is probably in my near future, I'm still looking at all the options.

Since we are talking Magnaflow, what do you think about this muffler in the stock location with 2.25 coming in from the engine and leaving with 2.0 from the muffler out the back?

While the case is very small (loud without drone is OK by me) the muffler core pipe and tailpipe would be 2.0 and I would think that it would keep the velocity up and keep drone to a minimum.

What do you all think on this?

HardCharger,

Since you have a heavy car, I would stick with the 18" long body straight through design, no baffles like in the XL version. Stan's Exhaust here in in Auburn, WA builds headers and exhaust systems for the Chip Foose show on cable mentioned to me that on our SL6 engines sound better with the 2.5" core with 2.25" ends, since it has more holes in it to absorb the sound. They say the new deeper body 5 x 8, verses the 9 x 4 with a 18" long case will help to absorb the sound better and is much quieter without peak torque resonance.

I am thinking pretty hard about letting them install one for me since the Thrush Welded/Flow Master 40 is so restrictive. I would have never guessed that one "V" shape diverter inside the muffler would cause so much back pressure at peak torque.
