| Post subject: | Torque Converter Question |
First, I've learned a lot from this forum about the /6 world and I thank you. I am starting my search for a rebuildable 225 to replace my seized 170 in my '63 Valiant. I know there is a change in the crank of '67 and up 225's that would not match my '63 A904 pushbutton. My machinist said I could simply replace the later crank with a pre-67 crank in the rebuilding process. What about changing the torque converter? Could I simply replace the converter instead of changing the crank. Would this match the later engine to the earlier transmission? Has anyone used a higher stall speed converter? This is a fairly low torque engine (say, compared to a big block V8) in a light car so I'm thinking that an advertised 3000 stall may actually stall more like 2200-2500 where it would provide extra off-line acceleration but not kill fuel economy or feel too "mushy". Any thoughts? |

| Post subject: | Use an adapter |
There are a couple of choices when putting a later motor in front of the early transmissions. You can get a forged crankshaft from an early motor. You can put an adapter ring in the crank register. And I suppose you could have Edge Racing make you a custom converter (large nose and early trans input spline pattern). What I did on my 63 dart was the adapter. Just a ring of mild steel turned on the lathe to fit inside the crank register and fit over the torque converter nose. I have seen the adapters available from an ebay store - Tflite Pattys (Pat Blais Transmissions). |

I put a built 340 behind my 65 Baracuda cable shift and used the bushing. I think it is called a yoist bushing. There was a article in one of our news letters that give the demintions but i caint find that newsletter. Charlie S would have that info. It worked nice no viberation or anything. Only problem the built 340 worked the 904 up some and now it has to be rebuilt. Thanks Ron Parker New Year New Gear |

IIRC, the ID of the big crank hub is 1.815", so be careful. I assume it should press into the back of the crank. Lou |

It doesn't have to "press" in, but it should be either a Thumb push in the crank or on the converter, and a slip fit on the other. I will double check the measurements today, when I'm in the shop. |
