K guys, i need your infinite wisdom here.
My car (1962 Valiant) before it warms up and even sometimes when it is warm, seems to quit at random. I usually try to keep the car on fast idle for about 10 minutes before i drive it to get the engine warm, otherwise if i accellerate too fast or stop too fast it quits on me. It seems that if I press the accellerator down to the floor and let the car rev to the max for just a second it helps a little but otherwise this is what happens.
-Most of the time it quits when i try to accellerate anything other than really damn slow. Those left hand turns in the big intersections, yeah, thats scary.
-It also has a problem with stopping. Most of the time it will be running fine until i get to the light or stop sign, and then it will quit without any warning.
I don't have a ton of experience with carbeurated cars, but it kind of sounds like a fuel delivery problem to me? Surely this isn't normal, even if the engine is cold?
Oh and if it is a carb problem, could any of you guys recommend where to get a carb rebuild kit for my car? Partsource doesn't have it.

It does sound a lot like you've got carburetor problems, which can certainly cause what seems like random stalling that's worse when the car's cold. Stop doing your "Rev to the max" trick; you'll damage the engine that way.

What kind of carburetor have you got on the car? That's the first step. Clear pictures would be best, but if you can't show us pictures, then numbers would be a second preference. There were two carburetor make-models used on the 1962 Valiant: Holley 1920 and Carter BBS. Your car is now 44 years old; any number of non-original carburetor types could've been installed as a replacement over the last four and a half decades, so ordering a carb kit by application (for a 1962 Valiant) stands you a good chance of getting the wrong kit.

Once we know what kind of carburetor you've got, the next stage will be to evaluate the condition of the carburetor. Perhaps a rebuild kit will suffice to put the carb back in shape, but likely it will not.

Don't know what "partsource" is -- a website? It's not www.partsource.com, that's just a blank marketeering page.

I figured the revving thing was damaging, it's what my mom told me to do, lol. I know for a fact that the carb is a carter, it says right on it. THere are two numbers on it: 1543 on the top part and 1429 on the bottom. I'll post pictures when i find my camera if you guys can't do anything with that.
Oh and as for PartSource - It's kind of like a Canadian version of Autozone, website is http://www.partsource.ca/.
Thanks,
Allen

OK, so almost certainly a Carter BBS. Now we just need to figure out if it's the original 1962 BBS or something from a later-model car. Remove the air cleaner and see if there's a triangular aluminum tag secured by one of the bowl cover screws. If so, find the number on it. It will look like "3239s".

Oh yeah, them. There's one of them about 10 minutes away from me. Totally useless place unless you're after cheap oil or riceboy junk (clear taillights, black headlight covers, fartcan mufflers). They're wholly owned by Canadian Tire. You're right, you won't find much in the way of parts for a 1962 Valiant there!

Well, i couldn't find the triangular tag, but i did find my camera and i got some pictures. If there's anything in particular that you can't see in the pictures i'd be happy to take some more if it helps with the stopping problem.

Definitely a BBS.

Open vent for the accelerater pump so it's and older model......

That "narrows" it down to a model originally intended for use on a car made between 1960 and 1970!

What we've got there is an original 1962 Carter BBS with some serious fuel leakage issues. Looks like thoroughly worn throttle shaft/bore junctions (front and rear), probably some other leaks towards the front, as well. This carburetor will need to have the throttle body rebushed to be put back in proper order. I don't see serious body casting warpage, so it's feasible to go through it with a kit. These carburetors (before 1964 models) with the internal choke vacuum piston are more finicky to adjust for cold start/cold running, and are more prone to choke sticking problems. I will post more thoughts and some procedures later tonight or perhaps tomorrow; I am already 3 hours late getting home for dinner, and my other half is getting upset.
