Overhauled engine for '79 Ramcharger, reinstalled, won't start. Had valve job done on head, kept pushrods in order, lifters got out of order. Has anyone set valve lash cold? Manual only gives procedure for hot set. Will be double checking timing next day I get to work on it. |

If the lifters are not on the same lobes, they were on before, you have a good chance of wiping out the camshaft, in a short period of time. However this would not keep it from starting. I would recommend replacing the lifters. As for adjusting the valves cold, just set them about .012 on the intake, and .022 on the exhaust. After the engines warms up, you can readjust hot, at .010 and .020. |

Does this apply to engines with roller lifters? My 87 Fifth Avenue has a bad lifter (318) and I was just thinking about taking out the bad one and dropping in a new one. Can you even remove the lifters on this engine with head still on? |

You don't have to worry about roller lifters..... You can replace the bad one, you can replace the cam and keep the same lifters, you can move them around too............ |

With any flat tappet valve train (solid or hydraulic) if the cam and lifters are used, the lifters need to be kept on the same lobes. If the cam is used, you can install new lifters on it. If the cam is new, it requires new lifters. Roller lifters, can be reused in any position, as long as they are in good condition. |

Installed new lifters, set cold, checked timing. Engine started, sounds good. Thanks to all who replied. |
