Hey Guys,

Question for all of you / Also Gauging intrest. - Please Complete survey on this thread.

I have a trashed Block - Due to clutch explosion disaster

Anyway, I was figuring I might make a honing plate out of the engine, Saw off the top of the block. I know Dr. Dodge has one, but For us east cost guys thats' a lot of shipping to borrow it.

I was thinking, I would have it as a rent a plate - You rent it for a fee - Plus shipping etc, then return it to me for others to use in th future.

Let me know if you think this is a good idea or if I am just a wacky idiot who has been brathing too many exhaust fumes.
Please complete the poll / leave feedback etc.

Thanks!!

Greg

I hope to use plates on my future engines. Not to discourage, but you should know that several people on the east side of the continent already have plates - Rick Covalt (VA), James Longhurst (NC), Drakes (NC), Bruners (TN), Coxes (OH)... Not sure if everybody will lend. Must be more I'm forgetting.

Sorry folks but I don't have a plate. I think Lou has me switched with someone in Virginia. I'm in Pa.

Pretty sure Slant Cecil, in Florida, has one, also. Don't know if it is available for rent.

What is involved in making a honing plate from a block? Cutting (OK, that could be a problem) and milling flat, drilling the headbolt holes for clearance, ...?

I'd think it would be fairly easy to make a plate from cast iron. I'd rather just start with a plate of raw material than start with a block.

I've built plates for big blocks before and they're easy to do. Just punch the hole pattern in to the CNC mill and let it machine them out.

Yeah, I have one, made by CJ Yother, same as the one Doc has.
I'd rent it out if anyone needs it. The best way to lower shipping costs would be, if several guys could schedule their motor projects about the same time, then ship the plate from user to user, then back to me when everyone's done. This would cut the shipping cost almost in half.
Who was it that made their own plate? He said if he had to do it over, he'd buy one from CJ.

Nice work...
How many Saws-all blades did you use?
(when I did my "block top" hone plate, I borrowed a friend's big a$$ band saw. It still took 45 minutes to make the cut)

Dr. Dodge, I think it took only three. I bought Some 12" ones from The Heome Depot, I fried my Sawzall in the process. All is good as I had it repaired.

I wanted to have a local shop saw it off - one shop that had done some work for me had a saw that was not big enough, and they sent me down the road to another shop. They looked at me funny and asked why I would saw off the top of the motor.
