Post subject:  1bbl Carb Rebuild, Is it difficult?
Hi there, I just got my Duster, fuel pump wasnt pumping gas. So i replaced it, pumps great now...but every drop of fuel the carb gets, it leaks right out onto the ground. :evil:

I've never rebuilt a carb before, and I'm looking to see how difficult it is, any links for a online step-by-step?

Hello and welcome! The one barrle carb (regardless of make or model) is a VERY simple carb and a great carb to learn on. Almost all one barrels are very simple and straightforward (I say almost because the 80s saw some pretty complex carbs) and do not pose too big a problem for a first timer to rebuild.

Any decent rebuild kit will have an instruction sheet with it, as will any shop manual. I am not aware of any on-line guides, but the sheet in the rebuild kit is enough to get it rebuilt.

Hey Goody. Was your Duster a '72 or '73? Cant remember. Either way, its a Holley 1920. Probably just bad gaskets from setting. I've had good luck with Neihoff kits or Wells. Like Reed said, the kits come with good instrustions on adjusting procedures and has an exploded view to show where everything goes. They are mind-numbingly easy, just remember to keep everything clean. Do not get a kit from Napa! The gaskets are some kind of sticky tar paper like stuff that sticks to the parts if you ever have to take the float bowl off to adjust the float or change the jet. Have fun, slants are fun engines to play around with.

Ok thanks for the info gang, I'll pick up a kit. The carb is actually leaking through a missing screw! so I guess i gotta hit the junkyard and 'borrow' one. Unless any kits come with extra screws or somethin, i doubt it...Also it seems to leak at the throttle shaft, is that a issue that will be resolved in the rebuild as well?

oh, and its a 1974 :D

A '74? Well, you may have a Holley 1945 on it. Not the greatest carb. They are a pain to get running right. My recommendations for kits still stands with this carb. I have a spare 1945 floating around and some parts so if you need anything let me know. They are also fairly easy carbs to rebuild, just don't loose the accelorator pump check ball!

Worn throttle shatf bushing will not be fixed by a rebuild kit. I would take the carb to a local carb rebuild shop and have them re-bush the shaft. Shouldn't cost too much.

These carbs are a whiz to re-build, but if your throttle shaft is worn, a rebuild won't help.
If you get one from the boneyard, check for the same problem. Don't pay more than about $20.
I recently bought a rebuilt one from AutoDrone for about a hunnert bux.

The Holley 1945's were set lean from the factory in 74. I would do a little experimenting with larger jets. Somebody here recommended a #60 jet.

I was thinking of just buying a new carb as well. I have no clue on the history of this carb. And a new one for a daily driver wouldnt be a bad idea..since the throttle shaft and all leaks it may just be easier to buy new.

Umm, they don't make these carbs new anymore. They do make remanufactured carbs but they are total piles of junk. DO NOT BUY ONE!
Most remanufactured carbs are improperly set and often times jetted to lean/rich for your application.

Do the right thing and rebuild the carb yourself or send it to a trusted carburetor shop.

Can anyone else agree on the reman carbs being junk? I'm leaning twords that because me having to go get the throttle shaft redone so it doesnt leak, i have to make sure the carb is a 100% complete..which i think its missing a small plate and the screw that the fuel is leaking out of. I'd much rather buy the new one and call it a day, however i dont wanna piece of junk. Autozone offers a 'OEM'' $80 carb and a $100 Reman carb...thats what they said they had. Any thoughts?

Parts store "remanufactured" carburetors DO NOT have rebushed throttle shafts.

Then do your shopping carefully. New-new carburetors and acceptable-quality factory remans (from years past) do go by on ebay fairly regularly. What exact year and model is it you're working with?

Thanks, well i just looked at mine. Just has a 'quality remanufactured' sticker on it :evil: So now any suggestions? I have a reman carb that i'd have to rebuild. My local junkyard doenst have one slant six there with a carb (i was there yesterday)

I guess i can see if i know anyone with a original 1bbl carb i can work with and rebuild.
