What is involved in swapping a 8" ford rearend (mavrick commit) into a 63 valiant? Just wondering about E brake, pinion yoke and spring/shock mounts? Any one know the difference in axle to axle widths? |

It is an easy bolt on. i speak from experience. The width is the same as stock, and the spring perches are the right width as well. The shock mounts are part of the spring mounts. You need a conversion yolk to work between the U-joints. Do a search here, and you will see the NAPA number from my work. I made my mopar ebrake cables work with my application. your mileage may vary. It is really pretty easy. give it a shot. Greg |

You need to watch out what 8" rear you get. The early 70s Maverick and 64-66 Mustang rears are the right overall width for stock Mopar rims (56.5" drum-drum). If you want to run late Mustang rims (more backspace), then get a late 70s Granada 8", which is about 58" wide. The late 60s Mustang rears are all too wide (59-61"), but have perches in the right place. Lou |

I have a Ford 8" if you are ever in the Bay Area, you can check it out. I also have an 8 3/4 so you can look at one side by side. For the most part its a bolt in affair. The e-brake looks the same. and There doesn't seam to be a problem hooking up the rear drum breaks. The axle tubes are a different diameter than either the 7 1/4 or the 8 3/4 its its in between. If I were to use the 8' I would probably oval each hole 1/16" and use the 7 1/4 spring plates. I might cut a washer out of some 3/16 steel plate I have to cover the hole if it looked weak? The other option would be to use the Maverick spring plate and maybe a ford Mustang Shock...I think mavericks are different on the top. But I haven't really looked into that option yet just thinking outloud...I do have the maverick spring plates and u bolts. Some early 8" rears have 4 bolt axles don't get one of these there are some problems and you cant put in 5 bolt axles. The last issue is the pinion snubber they are not the same but I was thinking about using caltrack bars anyway so it isn't an issue for me....the Granada/Verseilles rear also come in a 9" and sometimes with disk brakes. |
