Post subject:  just pulled the engine

Well I pulled the engine out of my sad '66 and oh boy. I think most of the bolts were stripped, not majorly but enough. My head gasket had gone (started to go) so I decided to stop driving old faithful before the name was a misnomer.

Well I had the head rebuilt (stock valve sizes), but the engine has just been started. I dropped it off at the machinist yesterday to see if it needs align-boring or anything like that.

Now I have a limited budjet and I dont need a racing slant-6 (not yet), but I do want a tad more useable power.

Here is what I am thinking, you guys feel free to provide input and advice:

1) Overbore cylinders (but how much?)
2) New camshaft with new mechanical lifters (but what is current lift and duration of stock cam with stock rocker arms) I dont want to go too radical maybe slightly more lift, but mostly looking for a little more duration.

That is about it, new oil pump, water pump, and fuel pump are a must, just going to use stock replacements. Re-using my old fan and my newly patched and flushed radiator.

What cam companies to go with? Crane? Comp?

Anyhow, you guys drop some lines. I Will search the archives in a bit.

Post subject:  forgot some info

The car is a 1966 4-door dodge dart, with the 3-speed 904, 7 1/4 rear with 2.76 gears. I have dutra dual manifolds into a single 2.5" pipe, and I am running dual 32/36 Webers. I have electronic ignition (the old style kept burning points) with a '73 style alternator and electronic voltage regulator. THe head is stock and I mean stock.

The car is a daily driver, but a tad more gusto never hurt. I will really stick it to the engine in the future, but I have other stuff planned first (brakes upgrade, suspesnion upgrade, rear-end upgrade to 8 1/4, and manual transmission Keisler I hope), all that before a more potent engine goes in.

but for now, all stock. brakes are next.

Seeing the Mopar 244 (basically stock cam) is good, but hard to find.

other suggestions?

Post subject:  new rebiuld

the best thing and first is to plain about 0.090 to 0.100 of the deck surface , with no head plaining this will give you about a 9.0/1 comp ratio if your piston is 1.80 down the bore at top dead centre. as for the cam use any brand with 260/270 degs duration and .490 lift with a 340 type vavle spring. clean up the stock oil pump and keep the rpms under 5000 and you will have a nice ride.as for the rear end put the 8.25 in with 3.23 gears should work fine. :)
