What is the little plug bolt that is located about 5 inches below the 5th and 6th plugs on the distributor side of the engine? Is it a place to put an oil pressure sending unit? Or maybe for a temp sensor? I'm at work and don't have any pictures of that side of the engine, so I made this really craptastic mspaint to illustrate what I'm talking about.

Sounds like the drain plug for the water jacket.

Tht would be the correct answer, and you might need a coat hangar to clear it if the engine has been around a long time....

IIRC, on older blocks there is a plug in the oil galley where they used to put the oil pressure sender.

Thanks for the info.

Is '64 an "older block"? If so, it would be nice to put an oil pressure sender in there, but for some reason I am loath to just remove it and see what happens.

Yes, but that plug is not in the location asked about.

Your '64 would have originally had the oil pressure sender in the oil gallery/block location. A 1965 Technical Service Bulletin recommended moving the sender back to its '60-'63 and '65-up location on the oil pump to obtain more accurate and faster oil pressure readings. There's no benefit to the block location for the sender.
