Post subject:  New flowmaster muffler
Hey guys I was looking at the Flowmaster website and I found this muffler

Looks like this is just the ticket for our slant six cars. As long as it doesn't make it sound like a rice rocket I am okay with it. I was consideringa 40 series but I did not know what kind of interior resonance I would have. I like the looks of this one and it still makes plenty of racket on the outside.

What do you guys think? Will it make my car sond like a ricer?

Jeb, I have a brand new 40 that's been droning away at my head for the last 6 months that I'll sell ya ;) I honestly don't care for the 40 series on my slant--I've been meaning to get something quieter but haven't yet. I think I would have been much happier with the delta 50 muffler, but didn't think it would fit at the time. It depends on your taste. At idle, the muffler sounds wonderful, but as you get up to about 45mph-60mph its just obnoxious for my taste--can't talk in the car or anything.

I tend to give two and a half strikes to a product aimed at "sport compact" cars. That's the polite marketeering term for the dumbåss kids with backwards baseball caps, "THOOMpa!" stereo systems, blue headlites, clear taillites, yellow vinyl asian lettering on their clapped out Honda Civic...

don't know what series it is, but i have a flowmaster on my 63 valiant. it's pretty loud for the most part but gets almost silent at about 60 mph steady cruise. next time i think i'll go for something a little more subtle.

I have a Delta Flow RV with 3" tail pipe on the Dakota. It has a nice hollow rumble at idle and when accelerating away from a stop but at cruising speed it is virtually silent inside the cab. I've never dynoed it or tested for either hp or mileage gains so I can't make any comment about that. I got it from Summit because I needed a replacement muffler and tailpipe; it was at a good price point and had the sound I was looking for. I haven't yet decided what to put on the Valiant; I'm still quite a ways away from that point.

I have a series 50 stainless FM on my work truck with headers. (FLO843051) At cruise it is almost silent inside the truck . At idle the sound is very tough yet fairly quiet. Outside at full throttle it is very loud,,,yet mellow. I can here the truck coming 5 miles down the lake on a clear day.

A lot of what works here is the rest of the exhaust system. I have headers (Hedman Elite) to a 2,25 primary 36" long to a Flowmaster 3" Y ....24" of 3" pipe to the Muffler and then to a stock 3" tail pipe. Merging the pipes creates the same effect as an X pipe. The lengths of the primary pipes is fairly important as is the size. The tail pipe can be almost anything that is large enough.

Lou has some great info from Cameron Tilley about ideal exhaust,,,,and it involves a single pipe.

Jeb, the 40 series blows...its loud as hell with my exhaust setup (2 into 1, 2" all the way back). If I had to do over, the 50 series they didn't have in stock or the dynomax would be my choice. Unlike others, the cruising speed that I need to reach to even be able to talk in the car is about 70 mph. Between 45 and 65 its just....crappy. The car sounds mean as hell at idle, and I love the sound there. The Delta 50s are supposed to give about the same sound outside the car, while reducing inside the car noise. I'm not sure if a resonator or something else would help (haven't had time to explore it) but honestly, if you want to listen to tunes or talk, its not a good choice.

I believe that others have had similar problems with the 40 behind a slant. In comparison, I've been in two cars with dual Delta 50s that are MUCH quieter than my single. One was a slant, one was a 360. Do yourself a favor and don't get the 40. Maybe I'm just getting old, but really, its just too much. Or if you gotta have that sound buy mine so I can get rid of it!

Okay guys I have decided on a Flowmaster 30 series but at $110 ouch!

Does anybody know of any alternative mufflers that are cheaper, flow good, and sound good.

As I said, Jeb, flowmasters are hype. I usually run good ole long "hemi turbos" on my V8 stuff, I have been told that Summit offers their own brand muffler which is made by one of the big companies that looks and sounds about the same as a flowmaster (like a motor running inside a 55-gallon drum) for cheep. Check them out before you part with your $$$ for hype.

So how does the 50 series Delta Flow sound on a slant with single 2.25 inch pipe all the way back? Anyone have this specific muffler and 2.25 single pipe that can tell me about their experience?

I have a FM 60 on my 4.0 Wrangler. After the initial quiet break in period, I really like the tone. It has a bit of a V8 sound. Not ricer at all.

On my 72 Duster 225, I went with a single Year One Hemi repro muffler, 2.25" pipe into a stock chrome tip. I happy with the outcome of this combo too.

The Flowmaster 60 is interesting to my since Flowmaster makes mention of smaller engines and 6 cyls.

I put my 74 Charger on a ramp today to see how much room I have to hang a muffler. Looks like I could put just about anything there. 5x11x22, 5x8x24 perhaps with a madrel kick up heading over the axle. Lots of room! :shock:

Perhaps a Flowmaster 70 necked down to 2.25 on each end would be good. :?:
