I'll try to keep this brief. I just bought a '65 valiant and it died out whille driving because the seal between the top part of and the body of the carb was leaking gas. I rebuilt the carb and it ran for about 5 minutes then stalled and died. now it won't start or it will just barely start then die? I was a helicopter mechanic for almost ten years and thought i was good mechanically but i have no real experience with old engines. anyone have any ideas what wrong?

Is there gas in the carb?

Clogged up fuel filter (or sock on gas tank side)

Bad fuel pump

Same thing happened to me after my 64 Valiant sat for 10 years.
I had to put a kit in the carb, replace the fuel pump, blow out the lines, drop the tank, clean and seal the tank, replace the sock and and float and boil out the sender unit tube. Nice clean gas now. Got about 5 lbs of rust out of the tank. I hope you have better luck.

If the carb top gasket is leaking, that'll need some attention. Gasoline leaks are serious. It's not uncommon for the BBS (if that's what you have) to be a bit , shall we say, non-square after all these years and a few rebuilds. You may have to do a bit of fitting there to give the gasket a chance of sealing.
When you work the throttle, does gas shoot down the throat? If so, you have at least some gas flowing to the carb.
Pull the carb top, and look at the floats, as well as the needle and seat.
Sunken or misadjusted floats can do this, as can garbage on the needle/seat, or just plain wear there. Remove the floats, and shake them. Can you hear or feel any sloshing inside? Wipe them down, and look for seepage. If they are leaking, you'll have to be a bit creative to fix it.
I just went through a bit of this with my '64's Carter BBS. Not too big a hassle. Get a rebuild kit anyway, and use what you need from it.
