Post subject:  oil pan leak
I'm about to pull my hair. I'm having trouble fixing and oil leak. The car is a 73 Duster with a 225.I've replaced the oil pan gasket 4 times. I've cleaned both the block and oil pan, dimpled the oil pan bolt holes. I've even used the right stuff. It still leaks. Any suggestions?Thanks

It may seem obvious, but be sure the front section, with the big rubber tabs, is oriented correctly. The tabs go inside to form a seal between the oil pan and timing cover.

Where is it leaking? Are you sure its not coming from the rear main seal or balancer seal in timing cover?

I would give the whole engine a through washing, use de-greaser then rinse with hose. Jack the car up, run it, and lay under it until you see the first drop. For all you know it could be a leaky head gasket that trails all the way down to the pan.... been there done that ;)

After you do the washing add a fluorescent tracer to the oil (auto supply stores have this product). Buy a "black light" incandescent bulb from a hardware store and shine it around at night after idling the engine. You should be able to see glowing from where the oil is coming.
