Post subject:  oil pump gear removal

Ok, after testing the gear on my new oil pump (Melling M-66C), I'm less than impressed. It tested right around 14 rockwell C. (I believe stock is specified at 30ish?) I'm trying to remove it, but I'm havin a heck of a time getting it off. I've just been trying standard 3 jaw pullers, and it's not budging. Any advice from someone who's done it?

I have placed a large socket or Bearing race or something under the pupm rotor. (pump cover removed)

Then take a flat punch and hammer and driven the center axle if you will out of the pump body. My gear puller broke the gear.

Sometimes a large hammer solves the problem. :D The last mechanical obstacle is out of the way, so tomorrow painting and installation into the truck begin. Yay!

Years ago I modified a tie rod end puller to do this job, my time spent back then has paid-off "ten-fold".
Nothing like having the right tool for the job!

Post subject:  Good Gear?

This is something I know not much about. My "new" oil pump from O'Rielly's lasted 6mths. before the gear decided to remove itself from the shaft. Luckily I was just pulling into my driveway. I still have the pump itself, warranty was non-existant. Can I press a good gear onto this pump and have an extra pump for emergencies? If so, how reliable will it be? Theres only so much room in my crankcase, can't be filling it up with too much clutter you know.

both myself and slantzilla, and more than I know about, have purchased hardened gears from Mr. dutra (doctor dodge).

I have no idea if he has any left.

slantzilla runs on nitrous and spins 6 grand, and its holding up fine, so its a good replacement.

I have a few more case hardened OP gears, send me a PM if you need one.
No reason why you can't press-on a new gear and have a good "back-up" pump but I would measure the pump's shaft just to be sure it has the correct interferance fit so the next gear does not come off.
