Post subject:  Cam questions

I see on flatlanderracing.com that you can get a Comp Cams 252 cam, and you can get it with the timing chain, lifters, valve springs, etc. as a package deal, and I think I'd like to go with that for my car.

First, I need to get the mechanical flat tappet, correct? And this is a pretty good cam for my application, right? (super six intake, carb, bigger exhaust, and a bit of grinding in the combustion chambers)

I'm thinking it would be a good idea to get the full package deal - since it's apart, why not put all of those new parts in it. Or would I be better off using a lot of the stock parts and putting my money elsewhere?

Thanks in advance for your ideas!

It seems that most people that have used the 252 Comp cam, wished they had installed a larger cam.

Yep, that is just a small step up from stock. Would work well with stock converter/auto. If you have a stick or can use a higher stall converter, get a bigger cam, like the Isky 264 or Comp 264.

I just have the stock converter and auto tranny, and I don't intend to do anything to the tranny in my car.

Do I need (or is it a good idea) to change the valve springs while it'll be apart, or will my factory ones work ok?

If you will stay with stock trans config, then the 252 will work well. If your springs are in good shape, then stockers will work. They may be fatigued, but they are cheap, and the machine shop can check your old ones.
