I have a 1966 dodge coronet 225 slant six. Today I have a new problem. It starts and runs fine untill I reach about the 3/4 point on the gas pedal. Sometime at 40MPH and sometimes at 50MPH. suddenly the engine seems to cut out and then proceeds to buck and continues until I let off the gas and slow down. Each time I reach that 3/4 mark on the pedal the process starts all over again. Last week she ran fine at 70 an 80MPH. Today I can't get past 50MPH. I'm new at this and haven't got a clue about what is going on. Please offer your thoughts. Thanks Otto |

Does the engine hesitate when in neutral/park and you rev it to 3/4 throttle or more? If its fine in all other situations and your not hearing any other funny noises - then my thought is fuel delivery issue. Maybe dirt/rust/etc clogging the pickup in the tank not allowing enough flow to supply the engine at high rpm? You can pull out fuel line to the carb and direct it into gas can, then crank the engine - you should see a clean, steady stream coming out. Keep an eye out on oil level too,... does oil smell like gas? |

Also, if your car ('66) has the original points distributor, you might want to check the points as well. Since you said you are new at this, you should really try and get a manual for your car to help you through all of this stuff. It makes good bathroom reading and will show you how to do everything on your specific car. Improper timing can also cause this problem but I would first look for a fuel system malfunctiuon as described. Tell us a little bit about your car. What type of carb do you have and what kind of shape is the carb in. You could floor my Duster and run it up to about 70 to pass somebody and it would cut out or backfire through the carb. Turns out the float level in my carb was set WAY to low, causing it to run out of gas whenever it encountered a high demand situation. |

Thanks for all the Help. I chose the simple solution first and replaced the fuel filter. When I removed it red sludge poured out one end "suggesting" the fuel filter was at least part of the problem. She ran great right after the replacement and we were all smiles untill this morning when it seemed things were worse than ever. Now the engine didn't seem to be getting any gas at all. Some time later as I stood staring at the engine.I noticed the fine print on the filter showed an arrow indicating the flow direction. After a laugh and a quick switch all is well and a lesson learned. Thanks again Otto |
