Post subject:  '87 lean burn question

I noticed that on the open highway,my D100 can only go up to about 60 mph. I'm wondering if there's some kind of governor in the lean burn computer?

Nope, the lean burn computer has gone south and is giving you no timing advance whatsoever. The lean burn distributor has no advance mechanisms, it relies on the computer instead to determine the advance curve. Since the computer has died, your engine has only the intial timing to go off of. Don't even try to fix the lean burn system, throw it in the trash and convert to a conventional electronic ignition such as GM HEI or the Chrysler Electronic ignition.

you'd even be better off with a set of points if you had that distributor handy.

Check both pickups in the distributor. Check teh resistance at the dist. connector with an ohmmeter. Both should test between 150-900 ohms. If one (or both :o ) are out of that range, reset the air gap of both to as close to .008" as you can get them (set one to .008", the other should not be more than .012"). Use a non-magnetic feeler gauge (e.g. brass).

Re-test them. If one still reads out of range, the pickup is bad.

The computer will run the vehicle with a bad 'run' pickup, but will not provide any timing advance. It will not run at all with a bad 'start' pickup.

Thanks for the info guys,I was only asking because I was curious. I have plans for an HEI swap in the works,I just need to find a switch for the lock up convertor, and rebuild a holley 1920 I have and I should be ready to go. Hopefully it will wake this thing up a little! :D
