While returning home from the Bristol show Sunday my right rear wheel bearing decided to eat itself. This is on my 63 Dodge Dart that has its original rear. My local parts store can get everything for the bearing including the seals which seems wrong because I thought there was a seal that couldnt be had due to the fact that 60-64 bearings are different than 64 up bearings.
My question is how hard is this operation if I have access to a press? Also,I dont have a 63 shop manual but I do have a 60 Valiant FSM and have been told that the rears are the same.
I also have a complete rear from a 72 Valiant could I use the right side axle assembly in the 63 rear or are the outer bearing diameters different?
One last question, could the bearing failure have hurt the gears?
Thanks for any help.

Will a 1960 right side axle shaft interchange with a 1963 right side axle shaft?

I have a good working 1966 7.25" axle in NC. 2.93 gears and good bearings - bolt it in. Let me know if you want it and I can probably bring it back on our next trip down.

I don't know if the shaft will interchange, but.
63-71 axel, bearing and seal are all the same. seal is National # 484058, and bearing is BCA # RWF 34R
60-62 had some different seal/bearing, and changed again in 72.
This is for a 7 1/4 rear.
Now you can get the parts, take the axle to a shop to have the bearing pressed and make, Piedmont. Cheap fix. Maybe I'll see you there, and will return the trans brace you gave me at Bristol about 4 years ago

Thanks fellas,
Lou,I am interested in the 2.94 rear . The only good 7 1/4 rear I have is a 2.76 which wouldnt be to good with 170 3spd.
The reason I was asking about swapping axles was to decrease downtime.I have a 60 rear that I was going to grab the axle out of and go ahead and get the bearing pressed on then just swap axles.

Charlie, the bearings and seals I got were listed for 60-64 and then there was a bearing listed listed for 65 -76 there wasnt any other bearings listed. Also do you reuse the collar that holds the bearing on the axle or do you have to get a new one,my bearings didnt come with one and they didnt list a collar in the catolog.

I am just trying to get this thing fixed because its the only on i have on the road right now.

Thanks for the help Fellas.

I think they gave you the early bearing. From what I can see, this does not use the lock collar. Just did a little more research.

60-63 7 1/4 rear 9" brakes

Bearing 25821 taper cup
25877 taper cone
seal inner 450776 w/o sure grip
470487 w/ sure grip
seal outer 6241s

63-66 7 1/4 rear 9" brakes

Bearing RWF-34-R
Seal 484058

67-71 7 1/4 rear 9" brakes

Bearing RWF-34-R
Seal 484058

67-71 7 1/4 rear 10" brakes

Bearing RWC-35-YYR
Seal 8660s

Did not go any later, at this time
