Thermostats, best one for street and strip car??

Post subject:  Thermostats, best one for street and strip car??
Id like to know the advantages and disadvantages of the following thermostats 160,180,and the 195....I want to pick the best one to use
for a street and strip slant 6. I noticed that alot of thermostats that are
the 160* ones on summit say for "drag racing use only" Any advantage to one of these on a hopped up street car?? Opinions please?? What to get-- what not to get???

160: Too cold. Engine will wear more quickly, make less power and consume more gasoline, and contaminate the oil more quickly.

180: Best for most purposes in most slant-6s.

195: Engine will burn less gasoline, but be more prone to pinging and you may encounter more hot-start/hot-driveability "issues", none of which would be particularly serious, just irritating.

Okay- Thanks SlantSixDan. Enlighten me on how the 160* will contaminate the oil more quickly? Im curious. And also do you think
that the 180 would help an engine run cooler???

Combustion chamber surfaces are cooler = greater tendency for flame quenchout = more unburned and partly-burned gasoline in cylinders. Unburned gasoline contaminates engine oil, and since it tends to wash oil off the cylinder walls, it also increases engine wear.

Cooler than...what? If an engine has an overheating problem for some reason, then changing thermostat temps won't fix it.
