I converted my 86 van to a Super Six using all factory kickdown pieces, except for the final lever on the transmission. I am still using the stock one-barrel lever.

At first I set the kickdown adjustment so that the lever was all the way back at wide open throttle, but then the kickdown wouldn't engage. So then I set the kickdown as per the Hatnes manual instruction--kickdown all the way forward, lever at trans held against internal stop. It seems to work better, but the kickdown is still iffy. It will engage almost immediately off of idle speed, but then it looses power and feels like the engine is lugging. Acceleration isn't the greatest either past 1/4 full throttle movement.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

Oops, that "Super Six" specific lever on the trans is important. I believe it is mounted in a different clock position relative to the shaft.

If it ain't broke, fix it!

I put a Super Six set up on a 62 Valiant and haven't gotten the downshift to work. I'm noT sure which direction to adjust it. The donor car was a 79 Volare and had a striaight linkage back to the tranny. The connector (shaped like a box) and screw head took up too much room. I replaced the screw with a set screw and that made it fit but haven't done any adjustment. Maybe a more knowledgeable reader can help?

I finally got mine to work acceptably. The way to adjust it is to get the carb off of the fast idle cam, lossen the locknut on the transmission arm, hld the transmission arm as far forward as it will go, then tighten the locknut.

For what it is worth, i finally got a Super Six specific transmission arm. So far I have ompared it to the transmission arm on a 1983 A-999 that came out of a Dodge van with a one barrel and it is identical.

To adjust, make sure the carb is not on the fast idle cam, loosen the lever clamp on the rod, and push it forward lightly until it contacts the internal stop (do not move the rod!) retighten the clamp and take it for a test drive. The trans in your 62 does not have part throttle kickdown.

If it still does not work, then the lever inside the trans may have come loose.

If you push the lever backwards, does it have some spring to it. It should return to the forward position when let go.
