Post subject:  Distributor upgrade
If anyone has put an electronic distributor on a pre-'73 (mine is a '65) Slant 6 I'd like suggestions on where to begin. Are there kits? Do I need to buy a handful of different parts? If I could find a yard with a 73 plus car would it be worth buying used parts?

Either way, you'll need a slant six electronic distributor and the connectors going to it. If you find a donor with the ignition intact, get the whole distributor, the module, and as much of the wiring in between as possible. I've read that you should avoid Lean Burn ignitions.

I'd get a new rotor, cap, and spark plug cables. Do a search for recommendations - those have been discussed recently.

I bought everything I need to make my 71 Duster HEI, for only 20 bucks.

But always a good idea is looking at junkyards for good donor cars, or get the module for Mopar

What does everyone think about the GM hei style ignition conversion
on there mopar? I thought about going to this because like many others
I have a mopar perf. ignition and sometimes it gets an intermittent miss
in it that's hard to get rid of... :?

I think Mopar Performance / Direct Connection had one. I'd check for them at the usual performance suppliers (Jegs, Summit, Mancini, etc) and on ebay, if you want that style.
Personally, I like my junkyard HEI. Cheap and effective, with a little of that shadetree mechanic vibe for good measure.

They pop up on E-bay all the time, to the tune of $120. You can get the same parts in a boneyard for under $50 and you will have to do the same wiring changes.

The closest way to do this swap to a "turn-key" kit is to upgrade your alternator and ignition system at the same time. If you carefully unwrap the wiring harness on a post 73 mopar, you will discover that the dual field alternator and ignition system can be removed from the vehicle as a unit without cutting any wires. The only mildly trick part is to remove the Ignition 1 and Ignition 2 terminals from the bulkhead connector (usually a big fat dark blue and a big fat dark brown wire). You then take the whoile system to your car, do the same removal, and you can plug the new system into the bulkhead connector on your car. Rewrap the whole wiring harness and voila! Clean as a factory installation you have now swapped to electronic ignition and a dual field alternator at the same time. Very time consuming due to the wiring harness wrapping/unwrapping, but I have done this swap on a 68 dart, a 63 Dart, a 64 valiant, and I think one other car and it has worked like a charm.

To do the sap this way you will need the alternator, volatage regulator, distributor, ECU, ballast resistor, and ALL the wiring associated with these items. THe easiest way to pull the parts is to start at the alternator and just unbolt components and unwrap the harness as you work your way around the engine compartment in a clockwise manner. As you go you can separate out all the wires you don't need so you end up with a harness that is just the ignition and charging systems.

All car parts on the road are "used", so don't let that frighten you.

Still, my recommendation is the HEI swap. Simple swap, and a better system.

True, but the MP distributor comes with an advance curve totally unsuitable for street use.

So to correctly bypass my ballast resistor on my '71 duster -Just take the
wires that run to the resistor and run them into each other?? Is this correct???

Well, here in Mexico folks tend to treath 70-80 cars like trash, so I buyed everything for a neighbor that got a 73 Duster forgoten in the street for one year.
