I go to a hole-in-the-wall salvage yard that is run by an older gentleman who has a lot of parts. He has a mid 70's Volare that has a 4 speed OD setup in it I asked him how much he wants for it, and he said $250-$300 for the tranny (cast iron OD tranny), $40 for the flywheel, and I can't remember how much for the bellhousing. I know it's high, but manuals down here are super rare. Plus I can get the setup complete if I want it (IE the shifter and all). I won't get it right now since I need to spend money elsewhere on my projects, but I'm definitely thinking about getting it within the next three months.

6 years back I scored from a 1977 Volare the bellhousing, tranny, shifter, crossmember, shift boot and driveline yoke for $150...

I would say $250 would be worth it if he give you everything from the flywheel to the driveline yoke (shifter included)...and he pulled it for you....

Manuals aren't getting easier to find anywhere anymore, and most yards don't like to hang on to a wide ratio box that can't go for $500 on e-bag...

Post subject:  Lars, its a fair price if you live down south, but...

Lars,

It is a fair price for the southeast US..where are you? I know the trannys are cheaper for some reason in the NW and in CA, but shipping adds on a $100 from there to the south. If you get it , as DusterIdiot is implying, be sure you get some added attractions...as in the rear mount, the crossmember part that the tranny mount bolts into, and the bellhousing dust covers and fork and pivot balls. A tranny by itself will need these added to work, at about $60 to $100 more bought separate. Parts are readily available from Moparts P+S, so I personally wouldn't worry about bad bearings and seals, just look inside and see if it has been under water. Water is real hard on the guts, but even that can be overcome with care.

i think i paid $400 with shipping 4 years ago for a complete '70 model (2.66:1 first gear) transmission with bellhousing and shifter and i thought that was a decent deal at the time. i still went thru and rebuilt it, and had to eventually buy a new shifter and rods, so i guess it wasn't such a deal after all. where are you located lars? i'm with dusteridiot here, thinking an OD box should go for about $150 by itself, then add maybe $100for the bellhousing and flywheel. THEN go ahead a rebuild it. used shifters tend to be useless IMOHO unless there is a nice handle attached, but the rods are hard to find new (you'll have real trouble finding the OD rods.) i'd suggest buying a new b-body comp plus shifter from jeg's and selling the handle and knob to get some of your money back.

I'm in Texas, if I get it, the plan is to get all the pieces that go with it so I don't have to hunt them down later. He wants $250-$300 for just the box, the bellhousing and other parts will be extra. I hate to say it, but I bought a tranny + bell and other parts a few years ago and paid about $700 after all the shipping costs. These 4 spds are next to impossible to find down here for some reason.

... or put the money towards a T-5 conversion instead...

I already have a T5, I don't have a bell though. Kinda wanted the "bolt in" ease.
