I'm finally at the point that I would like to paint my Valiant. I've never painted anything except with Krylon. I really don't know where to start but I've heard lots of suggestions. The car is cancer free and has only one small crease in a door panel that I can easily fix. Someone has painted over the original paint and it is flaking off. I sanded the hood this weekend and the paint came off very easily but I did not remove the primer. The original color is B3, Ice Blue Metallic.

What type of paint did Mopar use from the factory? Should I remove the primer and take it to bare metal to avoid any chemical reactions? Is a base-clear paint job better than enamel or polyurethane? What type of primer should I use? This is definitely a learning experience for me so any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would not remove the primer unless it is rusting through it. The original paint was an enamel and for a cheap paint job I would go with enamel. Base clear will give a better shine for more money. The paint shouldn't react with the original primer. Another choice is the super cheap trimclad http://www.slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic ... ight=paint

Regarding the Rustoleum paint job, I have one concern. I believe it's oil based. While that doesn't present a problem painting over acrylic, it seems to me it would pose a problem if you ever decided to do a "real" paint job, because you would have to remove all the oil based paint. Is this a real concern, or am I missing something?

Oil based? As opposed to what water? All automotive enamels are composed of highly toxic multi-letter words and put fun cancer inducing fumes into the air. Can you say isocyanates? As long as proper prep is used before any paint job there should not be a problem with paint adhesion.

I was really only suggesting that all of my limited painting experience is done with a spray can and not with a proper spray rig. I was looking at a shortcut to a color chart that Dan attached to another thread in the social corner and it said B3 was Ice Blue Poly. I'm assuming that's polyurethane. What's the difference between poly and enamel? I do have some spots that I had to remove all the primer to eliminate some surface rust. What primer should I use to cover these spots?

Nope, "Poly" is short for "Polychromatic", which was Mopar's word for "metallic". My '62 Lancer, for instance, was GG-1 "Glade Green Poly(chromatic)", a medium metallic mint green.

Polyurethane paints didn't exist prior to the mid-1980s.

B3? I always thought the official name of B3 was petty blue. Had a car that color once some years ago.

Nope, B3 is Ice Blue Poly. Petty Blue doesn't have a B-number.

Epoxy primer is supposed to be the best, that what I plan to shoot my cars with if I ever get that far.
