You will need for 8 3/4 conversion:

1.Correct A body width 8 3/4 housing with backing plates and perches in the right spots.
2.8 3/4 Third member.
3.Brakes for 8 3/4 depending on what size of backing plates you have.
4.Correct length Driveshaft that matches your Third Member Yoke and your Trans.
5.New brake lines (Maybe) I think you may be able to use some of the stuff hooked to your 7 1/4 for the 8 3/4, not sure. Someone will buzz in.
6.Think about if you want to stay small bolt pattern (5x4") or go to BBP (5x4.5"). You can get SBP or BBP axles.

All of this stuff is probably the same for an 8 1/4 swap.
If you need more info. on the 8 3/4, do a google search, or, use the search button up above.

Post subject:  carrigan, here's some of my cost to swap

Carrigan,
Hyper'72 gave ya a good list...I was working on a truck, but a rear end is a rear end. I wanted a 3.91 Sure Grip "third member" and they are usually in the $400 to $500 range unless you luck into a cheaper one. If you want non positraction, they are cheap, cheap as in free. All told I have about $1,000 in the third member, green bearings, all new brakes including backing plates and drums, and new shackle bolts and a new driveshaft, cause I wanted large u-joints and a 4 speed, so the driveshaft rework at $125 was added in to this total. Should'a done spring bushings while I was there but got lazy...save it for summer I guess.

is it worthwhile(cost effective) to go straight to disc rear when doing this swap?

this will be a summer project (one of many), so i just want to start collecting parts now...
thanks guys

Also think about if you would want your 8 3/4 to be a sure grip. If you are
wanting this expect to spend $500 on the pig (average new price). But
you can get a suregrip for an 8 1/4 for about $200 on ebay. They are usually reasonably priced to. 8 1/4's are common in V8 Dusters from 73-76. The
8 3/4's are nice because of the ease of gear swaps but can get pricey in a hurry. As Ron mentioned it usaully boils down to what you can afford.
I hear the 8 1/4's are pretty tough...Im about to find out.
Bang for buck Id probably go 8 1/4SG. Just my .02. Good luck with your
project!! :D

Or get a 9-inch Ford. But that would be completely overkill.

hmmm... thanks for the posts guys...here's what i want...
i want sure grip definately....the only reason i lean toward 8 3/4 is because of the ease of gear swap...
i'll being going to college in the fall in knoxville, tn and i want to be able to put some lower gearing (sure grip) in for in town driving (and showing off for the ladies with some burnt rubber), but also be able to switch back to a higher gearing for the drives back to VA...
probably won't look for a new SG unit...used sounds more economical for me...all in all i would like to spend less than 800 on the swap alone...
bolt patterns don't really matter to me because the cragar rims i want are slotted (universal)...
any input is greatly appreciated....

thanks for the .02, but i'm still not sure where that other penny goes....

I got my completely rebuilt third member off of ebay for $450.00. 3.55, Cone-type sure grip, 489 case. Has just been broken in by the seller. The seller I bought it from was 440scamp. He finds these suckers and completely rebuilds them, as well as paints the cases. He has a few on ebay right now. He always puts them on and always sells them. I saw a 3.23, 3.55, and a 3.91 from him in ebay in the past few weeks. If he doesn't have the one you wan't on ebay, email him and ask him if he could hook you up with a third member with what you want (sure-grip, whatever gear size, whatever case). He's a nice guy.

Pretty sure the bolt pattern WILL matter. I don't think the Unilug rims will fit the 4 inch bolt pattern. I think they are for 4 1/2 and 4 3/4 bolt pattern. Better check.

I'd have to agree with Charrlie here. All the known unilug wheels Im aware of bolt up from the 4.5 up to the 5 inch pattern. None of my unilug
wheels will fit my duster, demon,or barracuda... :x

Here is the other $.01. Why not consider the Ford 8 inch rear. Do a search on this site. There was a lot of discussion about this swap. If they are available in your area, certain models will bolt right in, with just a rear u-joint swap. Here is one link: http://www.slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic ... rear#95706

Mopar 8 3/4 Case Differences
Hey, tell if 440Scamp will hook you up with a setup of your choice or not.
I'm thinking I want to get another chunk for mileage.
Thanks,
Cory
