Post subject:  Automatic shift cable problem
The top inch to two inches of the shifter cable I have has been "bent" in the past. Now, when I installed it after getting it freed up, it just bends up inside the shifter housing and does not "push" the shift lever back into Park. I tried straightening it out, but it still just bends back at the original bent point. The tranny is a fresh rebuild and so the lever is a little stiff when shifting it too.

Can I stiffen the cable end somehow?
I was thinking that MAYBE I could solder the top end of it to stiffen it a little?

If not is there some way I can shift this thing until I find another cable?
There is one on Ebag right now but don't know how high the damn price will go on it.

Dan - this is the new automatic I installed in my A108 van.
It started life as a '69 A108 with an A745 manual transmission, which I have taken out. I cut the dash and installed the shifter from another unit I had and the cable was part of it also.

Repair for this has been to hopefully find a new or NOS cable. :?
GOOD LUCK.
We have found that, if you know a VERY good patient Brazer, the last 3/4" of your cable under the dash, just behind the top end eyelet, can be brazed/stiffened up to avoid this in the future.
Takes a lot of care and patience to keep from O/Heating and melting the core of the cable.
One of our members said he silver soldered this area with the same results. No more bending.
The entire cable MUST be relubed afterwards.
Aero-Kroil or Blaster works best.
Just keep, patiently, shooting it down the top end of the housing until it drips from the housing at the trans.
Disconnect both ends during this operation.
Sometimes it helps to have an assistant down at the bottom pushing and pulling the cable, in and out while you spray it gently into the top where the cable passes into the housing.

The cable Scottie sent arrived today!
I installed it and adjusted it and it is working!!
YEEEHHAAAAAA!!
No more kneeling down and reaching under the van to shift!
Getting so much closer to done with the mechanicals on this rig!
