Post subject:  Soft shifts

Everything is going fine on my car since I installed the supersix setup but there is one annoying problem. My shifts are know a lot softer than they used to be and come a little too early. I have also noticed some slight slippage in between shifts that I did not have before. If you floor it though the trans kicks down just like it is supposed to. I even have my passing gear again, something that the car did not have when it had the one barrel setup. I adjusted the kickdown linkage according to the instructions on this site. Did this uncover a band adjustment problem that I need to recitify or do I need to move the lever on the trans back a little more? Before it shifted nice and firm, and now it has Driving Miss Daisy shifts.

..might just need a little adjustment. You did get the trans lever off of a "super six" car, right?

Yep, it has the whole super six kickdown kit n' kaboodle. I'll try sliding back the lever a little more.

Yeah, you need to adjust the kickdown at the trans. Your '73 should have part-throttle kickdown (GOOD), so proper adjustment should yield nice-firm shifts without even flooring it (YEA!). The 1bbl kickdown has (some) adjustment at the carb, but Super Six linkage only adjusts at the trans lever. Trial and error worked for me. Good luck!

Have another question, I have been using the kickdown linkage spring(one at carburetor) from the one barrel setup. Did the super six use a different spring or what?

I adjusted the kickdown linkage this afternoon and now things are much better. No more of those "driving miss daisy" shifts. It can still use a little tweaking but that is for another day. after a couple of test drives the exhasut pipr got so hot that I couldn't work around it.

Now what about the spring.

Jeb, all the spring does is make sure that the linkage is against the stop (at the carb) in most circumstances, so as long as there is adequate tension to do that, you should be fine. The purpose of the slot and spring is so that in the event that the kickdown linkage catches on something that you drive over, it does not pull your carb back to Wide Open Throttle against your will.
