I posted this http://www.slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=16979 last week in the engine room and was hoping to get more info than I did. How about you guys with the high HP engines. Have any manufacturer recomendations or proven parts for me to add to the Dart??? Thanks |

Clifford probably has the most offerings for the slant six when it comes to volume of products, but lots of other companies supply other parts. Plus, many parts from other motors (especially Mopar smallblocks) will bolt right up or can be mae to fit with minor modifications. Intakes= Clifford and Offenhauser are the only ones still producing slant six intakes. In the past, slant six performance intakes have been offered by Lynx (Australia), Weiand, Mopar Performance, and (I think) Edelbrock. Aftermarket intakes run the gamut from near stock two barrel intakes, dual one-barrel intakes, four barrel intakes, single, dual and triple side-draft carb intakes, ram-effect four barrel intakes (the "hyper-pak"), and there may even be others. Camshafts= Most large cam companies have offered many different cam grinds for the slant six. Isky, Racer Brown, Mopar Performance, Crane, Comp, etc... The most difficult thing about choosing a cam is staying realistic about how the engine will be used. Buying the wrong cam can lead to crappy gas mileage and bad performance. Bigger isn't necessarily better depending on the intended use of the motor. Headers= Mopar performance used to sell them, Clifford (I think) is the only one still making them. A good alternative to headers is a set of Dutra Duals. Other performance parts= Whereever you can find them or whatever you can make fit. Fuel injection, electric fans, more powerful starters and alternator, electric fuel pumps, super chargers, turbochargers, nitrous, you name it and it probably has been adapted to the slant six, but probably not as a store-bought kit. The slant six never really got the kind of attentioon smallblock chevies did. Mostly because it was (1) a Mopar motor and (2) it was a six cylinder produced first in the days of cheap gas and big blocks and hemis and then was produced in the days of expensive gas and the dawn of the high performance four cylinder era. The slant six was always kind of an odd-duck when it came to performance parts. That doesn't mean that they aren't out there. You just have to look harder. One of the challenging, but fun, aspects of trying to build a slant six motor is that you have to really know what you want and do the reearch to build it. The slant six doesn't make the same kind of power as a v-8, so you have to realistically choose what purpose you will use the motor for (daily driver? weekend cruiser? 1/4 mile monster?) and select parts and build accordingly. Many many interesting and creative things have been done with slant sixes from multi-point fuel injection, to 300+ HP turbcharged strteet driven cars, to 260 cubic inch stroked motors. But most of these required fabrication of special parts and careful research and selection of the other parts. Probably the closest "receipe" you are going to get for a moderately high performance street slant six buildup for your 69 dart is as follows: (1) Factory Super Six intake running a Carter BBD or Holley 2300 (2) 2 1/4 inch single exhaust or dual 2 inch (headers or Dutra Duals) with low restriction mufflers (3) The Mopar Performance "264" cam (if you can find one- this is a rare piece these days and the last run of the was of inferior quality) or the Comp Cams 264 S Cam (very similar to the mopar performance cam) (4) 3.23 or numerically higher rear gears (5) convert to electronic ignition (Pertronix, factory Mopar, MSD, Mallory, Cran, Jacobs, etc... just dump the points) (6) if you are serious about performance you will also want to upgrade you front drum brakes to discs (again, many options with pros and cons for each) as well as upgrade your rims, tires, and shocks, and you will probably want to add a front sway bar, at least. This will all depend on the intended use of the car. You can definitely go beyond this quite easily. Bigger valves (from a Smallblock Mopar or Chevy or from a Ford 300 inline 6), a four barrel carb (the 390 CFM Holley is popular, as are 400 and 500 CFM Edelbrock/Carter AFBs) or a Weber carb, wilder cams ae offered by most manufacturers. Additionally you will want to do the standard things like disconnect the EGR valve and bypass the OSAC valve as well as fine-tne the ignition advance curve. The point is, it is impossible to give a generic "How to build a performance Slant Six" answer. You need to (1) be ealistic about your use of the motor, (2) be realistic about your budget, (3) be realistic in what you can expect to achieve with a slant six, and finally (4) be willing to do alot of research and most likely some fabrication. This site and www.slantsix.com have TONS of information and discussion about the pros and cons of different types of performance buildups as well as the pros and cons of different modifications. Use the search function to find most of your answers. What are your goals? How will the car be driven? How much money do you want to spend? |

Reed, Thanks, That was exactly what I was looking for. A few names and numbers to get the wheels in motion. Now I will start doing the leg work to find a combination that suits my needs. The car will be a summer driver so I don't want anything to hurt the mileage. I just want a little more than it has. Don't we all? Thanks everyone.
