| Post subject: | Rust in my Super Six manifold |
I got a 2 bbl iron manifold from a junkyard 77 Aspen station wagon . It has rust inside (hardly any on the outside). Is this common? How would you clean this out, or do you have to? Is it usable? The manifold I took off my car (I have a 73 Swinger) doesn't seem to have rust, but I didn't spray it with carb cleaner like the other one, so maybe it is just covered with grime. It also has the Carter BBD. There is no number on the carb. Do you know the carb number (or carb numbers) for the 77 Aspen SW? Would it be an 8087-S? I will need to (or have someone) rebuild it. I need to do all the brakes on my car. The calipers and rotors from Auto parts stores (like Kragens) seem very reasonable. Is there any reason I should think about rebuilding the original rusty calipers on my 73 swinger and turning the rotors rather than just buying new (rebuilt) ones? If you got a rebuilt caliper, would you get the CarDone, Raybestos, or Bendix? BTW, my exhaust manifold is exactly like the super six manifold. Same size exhaust opening, same choke pocket. I thought the super six had differences, so I paid for that too. Oh well. It's funny, they both even have the same broken bolts, one broken exhaust bolt, and one of those long bolts that hold the manifolds together. The one on my car I had been spraying for a couple of weeks with liquid wrench in preparation, still snapped two. I guess if they don't want to go, they just don't want to go. |

Let it soak in oven cleaner(lye) or some other hi-po rust dissolver such as oxi-solve or marine clean. Then blow thourghly with air hose. |

When you get the broken bolts out and are putting everything back together, try using stainless steel replacement bolts, brass nuts, and anti-seize lubricant. Of course, it may not be a problem in the future for you, unless you expect to keep the car another 30 years.  Jerry |

another thing that works on rust thought it would be hard to clean out on the inside would be to soak it in vinegar for a couple of days then take a metal brush and scrape/blow it ALL out chris |
