To what degree, theoretically could you improve an 85' slant with ESA by just deleting things ( i live in an emission exempt zone). I know you could make MUCH BETTER RESULTS with another carb (i have the holley 1945) and vacuum advance and MSD. but for curiousity would a slant perform better with fully functional emissions or without any? Without a catalyst could you not remove the EGR, vacuum amplifier, and air injector all the same? would this not create better flow? able you to advance the timing and increase mileage/performance? im working at 16@BTDC. i am confident that the computer and carb are still decent and I just finished reinstalling my distributor PS anybody come across these floppy reluctors THEY say dont file them but if THEY want 0.012inch all around how the HECK otherwise can you do it.

By 85 the auto manufacturers were getting there act together with emission controls. Emission controls were part of the system rather than the add-ons they were in the 70's. And the manufacturers actually started to get back the lost performance of the first emission control systems.

So any deleting of parts on an 85 will most likely make matters worse............ i.e. delete the EGR, and now your carb calibration and ignition timing curve are wrong because they weren't designed for that.

So unless you spend the time to recalibrate everything, just removing some parts isn't going to help, and will most likely make things worse..

On the other hand, the computers Mopar used to control the engine fuinctions in the 80s are prone to failure and are expoensive to replacenless you can find one at the junkyard.

On my 86 van I removed the malfunctioning spark control, removed the EGR, replaced the malfunctioning 6145 Holley carb, but left the air pump and catalytic converter in place.

I bypassed the computer on my 87 D100 truck and installed a new distributor and went with the HEI setup. It runs so much better and has alot more power even though I still have a 1BBL setup. Can't wait to see what a 2BBL or EFI setup will do. Since it is burning the mixture better my air pump does not run all the time like it did before. A properly working EGR valve should not make that much difference for a daily driver.

Reed, did that SCC I sent you do any good?

Rant, you live in an emmision exempt area now. What if that changes? What if you sell it to someone who doesn't? They'll have to search around for the parts.

The air pump always runs all the time. It has no choice; it's belt driven and has no clutch.

Youre right of course however I never sell my cars running anyways when im finished with them they get stripped for parts and hauled as is. In Ontario,Canada you ethier sell a car certified or for parts. AS IS doesnt work here like it use to anyways (unless its a classic)

previous dodges i owned - 1979 chrysler cordoba (guy bought it for race car smashed it after a couple of laps) 1969 dodge d100 bought $100 towed away FREE! 1989 dodge mini ramvan cops took it away( the tow truck that took it was more "unsafe"driven by the mayor of this hicktown of Wiarton . Ill get even someday!
its good my Suburban got "totalled" cuse I NEVER would have been able to sell it otherwise anyways
