| Post subject: | Slant Swap to a Ranger |
My son came in the other day DEMANDING that I take his Diplomat around the block to see if I could figure out whats wrong with it. After driing it for abit and determining in my limited knowledge of Slant Siz motors that it may not be much longer for this world I told him to get to work on his 1983 Ford Ranger that I gave him. Thats when my wife spoke up and put forth this idea.............. While our son is driving the Ranger, pull the motor from the Diplomat, rebuild it and transplant it into the Ranger. I think she is over simplifying a long involved process of cutting fabricating and long nights. But my ? is will it work? I know I will need to make an adapter plate for the trans (4 spd Toyo kogo) and motor mounts but what other things do I need to watch for? Thanks |

The Slant Six is quite a bit longer than the engines Ford put in the Ranger. How much room do you have? |

Almost anything *CAN* be done, the question is whether it makes sense. In this case I can't believe that it would be remotely close to cost effective to make this swap. You would probably be many hundreds, if not thousands of dollars ahead to rebuild a motor that was original equipment in the vehicle. |

Im not sure about the room. I guess Im putting the cart before the horse in finding out if it would work or not. We have discussed rebuilding the Original 2.3 liter 4 cylinder in the truck all the way up to shoehorming a Chevy 350 into it as well. Thanks for the site I will check them out and see what I find. Yes we may be money ahead just to rebuild the motor thats in it but how many ppl can say they put a 225 Slant Six into a Ford Ranger? I know dumb reason to do it but if and when I do it, itll be one of a kind. Thanks for the help. |

I would bet you will have to cut the firewall. Why not rebuild the slant, and put it back in the dippy, while your son drives the Ranger? Then you could do whatever you want with the Ranger, while having the dippy to drive. Would be much less time and money. |

I don't know what year ranger you are working with, but there is no way a slant would fit in my girlfriend's '02 ranger without major surgery to the firewall and core support. The V6 that is in there barely fits..  Earlier rangers likely have more room, but not 3 cylinders more room. My $0.02. -S/6 |

Rebuild the slant for the Dippy, then turbo the 2.3 in the Ranger.

You could mount the Slant in the bed. That would probably be easier. I like the idea of a slant in a Ford! |

I've see a couple of Rangers with 5.0 from mustangs in them. It seamed to work out fine. |
