About a week and a half ago (while trying to impress the new pole peelers) I launched the car pretty hard up the road. At the top end of 2nd gear the car just quit. I stopped , put the car in neuatral and rolled backwards down to the auto shop. It stayed there till now cuz I was way too busy to even look. I did however put the trickle charger on it to make the car at least think I cared. Today I checked for voltage at the coil,,,YUP,,,no secondary spark from the coil....HMMMM. I pulled the cap, turnder overt and the rotor never moved. Pulled the distributor and no gear,,,none. I fished a piece outta the hole and it is munched. Is this common? Is this connected to my munched oil p/p gear? Do I call Comp Cams? Is that 270 Erson in my future? Do I just get another dist from the slant pile , do the curve I promised the car last fall?...... |

Is it an old nylon gear, or is it a replacement steel one? After this many years and all that heat, the old nylon gears often crack if you even look at them the wrong way... |

NAPA Echlin DG-404 iron distributor drive pinion. Standard-Bluestreak has it too, as DG11. |

Were they impressed?......they are from Ontario (Canada NOT cALIFORNIA, SILLY) they are imressed by any car over 5 years old that starts and runs,,,,,if only for a burnout. I would buy an iron gear,,,,but $5 is out of my league and 15 minutes to replace....thats OK for you experts. (ok that was sarcastic,,,,,beeen at the beach with GF and 6 pack of ales......) |

Hey Dan I did a search for DG404 on the NAPA website and it turned up a plastic gear. |

Huh, how 'bout that. Well, either the catalogue's screwed up, or they've "consolidated" the iron gear out of existence. I'll check when I get home. Either way, Standard/Bluestreak DG11. |

Post subject: | dist gear |
My plastic drive gear lasted 150Kmi - I only replaced it to be safe - so don't forget to check that for drag in the dist. |

Hi Sandy. I'm new here and would like to thank you for your reply to one of my other posts. About your distributor gear: it would be worth a quick check to make sure the shaft really does spin free and without to much wobble. Also you might as well shim out as much of the endplay as you can while the gear is off. I would go with .005" to .010" endplay. It has made a difference on every other engine I have worked on by keeping the timing as stable as possible. When that shaft moves in and out every degree at the distributor is two degrees at the crank. It also makes life on the gear a little easier since it is not slamming back and forth with rpm changes, especially when you rev it up. |
