Post subject:  Wheel Bearings and Races

The other day I bought 2 new rotors, bearings and oil seal for a forthcoming swap to LBP discs on my 65 Dart wagon. So I was looking at the rotors yesterday and noticed they had new inner and outer races already installed. I've always heard that you have to used a matched set of bearings with the included races. If I have to pop the races that are in the rotors out to use the ones that came with the bearing I will, but I'd rather just use the new bearings. No problems or use the "matched set"?

It takes about 10 min labor and a few hamer swings, why risk it?

Use the matched set

And use a brass punch

Personally, I wouldn't worry about it. My 64 Dart and 66 Dart road course pounders both have rotors that came with races installed and I used non-matched bearings. No problems. This may have been an issue in the 60s-70s, but tolerances are tighter now on parts like that.

I agree that there is likely no harm to be found. If you dont fell confident to change them or lack the tools you may be better off with the pre installed races than beating on the new ones.

Off to the Races!

I'd have no problems in pulling out the "old" races and using the ones with the new bearings as a "matched" set. Way back in the 70's/80's you always used the races that came with the bearings as a matched set. As Lou mentioned tolerances have greatly improved since then. It just seems kind of a waste of time/money to replace them. Thanks to those who responded for their input. I'm just going to use the bearings and if I find that it wasn't the best idea, I'll do a follow-up to the thread.
