How can I tell what I have A-904 or A-999? Can I convert a A-904 to an A-999? How is it done? bwhitejr |

The only way, I know of, without opening up the trans, is to get the numbers off the trans pan rail, and decode them. You cannot convert a A-904G to an A-999G. Most parts from the 999 will go into the 904 case, but the 999 uses a double wrap rear band. This required a different anchor in the case. The cases are different. I don't know if there was ever a A-999G trans. Maybe in the trucks, or "fleet" vehicles. (Anyone know about this?). Most six cylinder "heavy duty" applications got the 727 trans. The 999 was for 360 engines.

OK. Here is the dilemma. I have a free A-904 for a small block (don't know whether it is an A-999 or A-904) I am going to put a 360 performance street/strip motor in a 72 Duster. Would I find it easier for bolt-up and performance with a rebuilt A-904 or get a A-727 and rebuild it? bwhitejr |

This is what I would do, if it were me. I can do my own trans work, so this makes sense for me. Take the "904 apart, and see how many clutches are in the clutch packs. If the front clutch has 5 friction discs, just rebuild the trans and use it. If it does not have five frictions, get a A-999LA from a 360 engine in a salvage yard, and rebuild that. I would not use a 727, except on a big block, or a truck that see's heavy hauling. PS: make sure you use a 360 converter, with a 360 engine. |
