'72 Duster are the front drums 9" or 10"?

Could be either. A v8 will have 10" but slants could still have 9".

THat's right. Three brake systems were available on the '72 Duster: 9" drums front and rear, 10" drums front and rear, and front discs with 10" rear drums. The fender tag on your '72 will say what the car was originally equipped with, but since all the systems can be retrofitted in place of one another, the car may now have something other than what it started with.

Was there a oddball option of 10" front with 9" rear? I seem to recall the 73 dart sport that my brother had years ago being equipped that way.

My '70 Duster (225, a/c) came factory equipped with 10" front/9" rear. I think I remember this is a '70 only deal, but could be wrong there.

Not quite in the same category but my 69 A108 has 11s on the fronts and 10s on the rears. Am getting ready to either sell or part it out if there's any interest

The reason why I asked is that I thought it strange that my fronts appear to be 10" and my rear brakes are 9".

At one time I had a parts car in the yard, don't remember what it was. It had 10 inch drums on the front and 9 inch drum 7 1/4 rear.

Officially, there was no 10" front / 9" rear setup ever offered. While it's possible a few cars slipped through that way when Chrysler weren't having their best quality-control years, there are more likely explanations for the 10" front / 9" rear combo: Someone swapped the rear axle and didn't notice or care that the original had 10" and the replacement had 9", or someone upgraded the front brakes without going to the extra expense and effort of upgrading the rears.

If no brake info on the fender tag, it'll be on the broadcast sheet (harder to find!)

Any particular reason you XXXXX'd out the VIN and VON?

I call BS on this, Dan. I have some info somewhere that sez otherwise, I'll have to see if I can dig it up. As I remember, if you got the 225 and A/C, you got the 10"/9" certain years (I was thinking '70 only, but was probably wrong on this after further consideration).

If he were in Oregon a conman can quickly use his VIN to put a lien against his title...so you can't sell the car until it's paid or surrender the title to the lien holder...(the legal loophole of the law is to allow tow companies to repo abandoned cars...but...there are ways to abuse it...)

In the late cars, the "B" code shows brake type if listed B05-B46...

OK, I could be wrong. I'll make ya a friendly wager: I'll bet you one of my grandfather's patented peanut-butter-and-aged-white-cheddar-cheese sandwiches that the factory didn't offer 10" / 9". I am an information hound (the vast bulk of my very large collection of international Chrysler sales/service/engineering/tech literature is not yet electronically available), so if you can find factory info stating 10/9 was available, lemme see it!

Well, Dan looks like you owe me a sammich...

The first factory Service Manual that I picked up, which happens to be 1975, sez, on page 66, section 5:

SPECIFICATIONS

DRUM BRAKE V-L MODELS

(under 6 Cyl)

DRUM DIAMETER

Front.........10"
Rear..........9"

So apparently, the 9" front drum was not even offered in 1975 (and I didn't know that)

Unfortunately, I don't have service manuals covering every year and make, specifically, I don't own the 1970 one. I can assure you that my Duster brakes and suspension were original and unchanged when I bought the car from the original owner many many years ago.

My old Chilton manuals (I know AAAAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGHHH!!! get the garlic!) list several instances of Dart/Valiant 6 cyl cars being equipped with the 10/9 combo from '70-up. I know you dismiss any Chilton information, but I already won the bet with the Factory Service Manual info!

I swear I have seen (but cannot find at the moment) information stating that the 10/9 brake combo was part of the factory A/C package on slant 6 "A-bodies" of that era.

Please mail the sammich priority overnite so it is still fresh when I get it.

I'm gonna contradict myself now. I realized while pondering on the way to werk today that my '72 Valiant, which is a factory A/C car, has wall to wall 9 inchers... So although I have proven the 10/9 deal was factory available, I have no idea what set of options it took to get it. Be interesting to find out, though...
