Post subject:  got a 833 for birthday present

Got a very interesting low miles (80000 km total on this trans) hurst equipped a833 transmission. I'll be upgrading my car from a 904 to this transmission. I'd like to know if all those casting numbers mean anything (I can get them and post them if I can get some "juicy" data from that)

It's about the right time to do it! I have my car bared to the bones... I'm restoring her completely. Black leather (genuine argentine premium leather) upholstery, capriblau exterior (med metallic blue from BMW)

I removed everything from trans hump to linkages, clutch assy, bellhousing (cast iron... heavy mother!!) etc etc etc clutch and brake pedals, all the stuff I felt I need for swapping the trans.

Do starters interchange? do speedo cable is the same?

Hurst shifter has a serial number on it.... means anything?

thanks!

how can I tell? I don't know nothing (just have gone thru the 833 4 speed overview by doug and others) and I don't have the necessary amount of experience with 833 (actually is my first car wich's gonna be having an american 833 transmission... I've had some argentinian made 4 speeds before but they suck... direct gear worns out even bolted to a slant six... so I haven't been keeping up with 4 speeds stuff for quite a while now)

casing is all cast iron, tailshaft is short, I believe that clutch assy is 9.25", as I said before, shifter is hurst.

Where I can get material on shifter rebuild instructions? I don't know if it's going to need some service or not (shifting was tight and good even with a worn clutch, no noises whatsoever in any gear, still would be good to know "weak spots" of possible sources for faults)

Post subject:  Argentina, I will send you a step by step group of pics if.

Hi Argentia,

Always enjoy your posts! NOTHING to redoing an Hurst shifter. I will email you a step by step of pics if you PM me with your regular email address. I don't know how to send or attach pics on the forum so just use my home email. The $#!+ rebuild one of the few tasks that would be hard to screw up if you just do it at one sitting and keep tabs on a few small parts. For supplies on assembly all you need is some good grease for lube. I had to fix one that I bought off ebay....and the seller sandblasted it. Lemme tell you, sand and shifters don't mix.

hey rock

thanks, you've got PM

I can tell that the shifter ain't no "princess" looks sturdy, works great and I got a sampe of its ferocity: the tunnel was misaligned (meaning, the shifter hole in the floor was a tad out of line because I started to chop that piece before doing the test drive, then I realized that I had to test it if I can, got some half ass -quarter of an ass actually- fuel cell -big bottle in the roof and one hose to the carb) and slamming thru the gears I bent the sheetmetal on the floor!!!!  I figured out, what the heck, If I'm braking it I'm breaking it while it aint' on the car

The transmission was full of fluid (much like auto trans fluid) according to my local chrysler branch released factory service manual, this transmission is lubed by auto trans fluid is that right??

On a funny note, the body of the donor car was so rusty that when I chopped of most of the floor and trans crossmember, (I removed the trans thru the interior, talk about a new method of doing things) it went down, like a piece of butter in the sun.... low miles car but the owner lived 100% of his live right across the sea in my hometown, mar del plata.

By the way, I didn't perform any crap cleaning like sand... just had it steam washed to remove most of the 40 years old grease...

Duh...! I did

as a matter of fact my wife hates the sound of my automatic transmission so she was happy  Got away with it due to birthday and "sound effects" ....

I don't know what "corinthian" is (applied to leather)... we're talking about real stuff, small animals skin processed in the way that good leather has to be: non-enviromental safe (sorry but's true... luckily for me they A) allow $#!+ like this to happen, we don't even have emission standards! and B) they don't do it anywhere near to my place...) If you can elaborate about "corinthian" I may catch it on the fly

Corithian Leather was nothing more than a marketing term to make what was really an ordinary leather sound like something exotic. The leather in a Cordoba was a quite ordinary leather with a vinyl surface coating to make it easier to clean. Legend has it that Ricardo Mantalban invented the term while rehearsing for the Chrysler Cordoba commercials.

Uh. duh... duh... I think I got it! corinthian would be coated skin leather type. Nope, this is the creme of the crop. just the surface with the process and dying but no paint whatsoever. I know what you meant if you are referring to the coating with corinthian, the problem is that often that coated pieces of skin ain't straight from the surface, they're from below but poressed and painted because they don't have the surface strenght that the real stuff has.
