Hello. I have a 1970 duster with the 7 1/4 rear axle. I switched to new rear axle bearings today. After doing this the noise from the rear axle got much better. But there still is some noise going on, it sound like it's coming from the axle casing, so i checked the fluid level, and the oil was totally black and It's not quite up to the level. I figured the axle might be beyond resque, but I still wanna replace the fluid. But, I dont know which fluid to put in there. I live in Sweden and I only drive the duster during summer here.

Would really apreciate your help!

Hej hej, Robert.

The rear axle lubricant level is easy: Drain the old lubricant, and then fill until the level is up to the fill plug (If you were to add more, it would drain out the plug hole!)

Haha, hej Dan! Thanx for your reply! I'm gonna change the oil tomorrow, It's late here in sweden now. Is there a fluid that you would recomend, not sure what to get. Also, I have a bog/hesitation from start on my completely stock duster 1970 with the holley 1920, and I remember a post where you had some great information on how to tune the carb. Been searching all over the forum, but I cant seem to find that post.

I replaced the air cleaner filter and the gas filter today, it seemed to be a little better after that. All the hoses and such seems to be properly connected. I tryed to to make it run a little richer by turnin the idle mixture screw just a little counter clockwise. It runs better after that, but there still is a bog, and also som shooting from the carb sometimes. When the enginge is completely warm it runs a better though, but the bog/hesitation, and also the feeling that it dont run completely right is there.

I think there is a missing hose from the airclenar down to the manifold (quite big hose). Atleast it looks like that shoul be a hose there.

75w90 hypoid gear oil ought to work fine. If you tell the parts store you need rear axle fluid for a Volvo 240, they'll sell you the right stuff.

Sounds as if your carburetor's accelerator pump is maybe not working as well as it should. With the engine not running, and the air cleaner lid removed, look down the carburetor as you operate the throttle. You should see a nice strong stream of gasoline shoot inward towards the middle of the carburetor. If it is weak or dribbly, the accelerator pump is not functioning properly. Your carburetor might benefit from a rebuild.

Yes, correct. This hose brings warm air to the carburetor when the engine is not yet warmed up or when it's cold outside. This hose, about 5cm diameter, should definitely be installed.

Thanx again Dan, very helpfull! I got the correct fluid for the rear axle and replaced the old one today. I also used your tuning advise for the carb and did some adjusting with the accelerator pump lever and installed that missing hose. Ran much better, but not quite right. But, after adjusting the egnition it now runs very much better. Been working on that Duster all weekend with my dad!
