flipping through mopar muscle i found an ad for spec clutch. called and got an application for the slant. not listed on the web site though. heres the specs: diaghram(sp?) pressure plate SFI certified capable of holding 400 lb. of torque 9.25" diameter, 1"x23 spline list price of $260 for stage 1 kit with pilot and throwout bearing steel-backed and multi-compound woven organic material disc sounds lika good deal to me and will be my next clutch. zedpapa |

Please let us know how that works out. That is a great deal if it holds up and is a nice diaphragm PP. Let us know what it looks like or post pics when you get it, if you would. Thanks, Lou |

Very cool....thats prolly the clutch I need now. ....and it fits in a 3 speed bellhousing! Note : the turbo 2.3 Tbird 5 speed clutch is a 1" 23 spline 9" ( thats what I use) Very inexpensive and effective. |

i won't be able to get it anytime soon but i thought i would pass on the information i found. i know some people on here were trying to get a custom setup made a while ago. they also told me that the package can be made to hold more torque if needed. zedpapa |

I emailed them a few mails, he said he will contact back soon but haven´t heard anything after that. That was in january... He said that they have a 10" option in stock but wanted to look for smaller with same strenght. Quote: diaghram(sp?) pressure plate
This sounds a lot like the clutch i want. I´ll have to try again.

Does it bolt up to the stock 9.25 or 10" Bolt pattern on the flywheel? or do you need to get a new flywheel with it?? Greg |

from what i was told it is a "stock" replacement clutch and should work with stock mech. linkage. it is 9.25" in diameter. as far as a new flywheel? i would at least get it resurfaced, but if you're in to racing, i would try to find one that is sfi certified. or have one made. clutch explosions are not pretty. i called and spoke with a rep on the phone by the name of Paul. knew exactly what i was looking for but had to look for paperwork on it. zedpapa |

I'm curious too. Now that I'm waffling back towards an A833OD conversion instead of keeping my 904. Yeah I know, I'm waffling almost as much as John Kerry... |

Spec makes some good stuff. My boss has a Spec clutch in his Miata, which is putting over 250 hp to the rear wheels. The clutch he's got is a race piece that doesn't engage too smoothly, but it has held up pretty well for a car with two and a half times the stock horsepower (and the torque has been scaled up by about the same factor too thanks to a turbo). |

Post subject: | They don't have a slant clutch |
Hi all, I emailed Spec's engineers, and they do not have a slant clutch. The engineer in question knew that the 273 was close, and suggested it. He is willing to work with us, but needs pictures, diagrams, measurements, etc. there is this article http://slantsix.org/articles/clutch/sl6-clutches.htm Is there anything else that I should show him? I would like to show him something better than the hand written notes that are scanned in here. Lou, Doc, or Sandy, do you have anything hiding in your notes? Thanks, Greg |

I was under the impression the 273 clutch was exactly the same. Doug's article should have those dimensions, IIRC. Lou |

my bad. It looks like the 10" clutch version is the same for both the V8 and the slant. Was there a 9" version for the V8? Which one is the most preferred? I thought it was the 9"? Thanks, Greg |

273s usually got a 9.5" clutch. If you're going to run high RPM I like a clutch coverer that isn't scalloped around the bolt holes like the 10". |

I have abused the crap out of my 9 1/8 clutch for years. My only probs have been the discs....which lose springs on hard launches. I just got a new ceramic disc from McCleod. It is a ceramic unit ....dual purpose ...made for Taurus SHO and Turbo Coupes... $110 with shipping The 9"pressure plates seem very sturdy. |
