I did not like the slide hammer method of removal - the threaded rod worked well - my variation was to use rod that extended past the front of the bellhousing and put a 2x4 across the front of the bell. Then drilled the 2x4 so the rods came through - gave each a flat washer and nut. then by alternately tightening the nuts the pump slid out nicely.

I used c clamps to take apart the clutch pack - This was no fun - next time I will track down a tool to compress clutch pack.

Large snap ring pliers are a necessity. And a set of seal/bushing drivers help a lot.

Post subject:	A-904 & A-727 Specialty Tools - Where?????
I was looking at the rebuild manual for a A-904 and A-727 and the pictures show what looks like specialty tools for removing and installing bushings, removing clutch packs and pistons. Where can I get or borrow these tools? Or better yet use something I already have! bwhitejr

When I overhauled my transmission I was worried about the same thing. You will need a small slide hammer to remove the front pump.If you don't have that avaliable, you can thread two 3/8 "long bolts into the front pump and use a crowbar to bang on the bolts to remove the pump(this idea was given to me by the master rebuilder Pat Blias) An arbor press is helpful to compress the springs in the clutch baskets. I suppose you could use a big vise if you have one.Having quality snap ring pliers (snap-on) will help too As for the bushings they can be tapped out with a punch. Overhauling a 904 (a 727 is almost identical) was not as tricky as I thought. It is pretty straight forward and quite easy.The service manual is very thourough and detailed.It is very good at walking you through the step by step process.Take some pictures as you go along so that you can easily reassemble the unit I recently overhauled a honda front wheel drive 4 speed automatic transmission.Now that was an extensive job.Rebuilding the 904 gave me the confidence to tackle the honda transmission. Take your time, clean everything,follow the manual, and enjoy.

And a set of seal/bushing drivers help a lot. I use a chain, 2 bolts and a crowbar to get the pump out Kinda hackish but works for me. Other then that I use the basic tools that where already said in this thread. I was a little worried too when I saw all the fancy tools they where using in the manual.

After following a few leads (hints). I found the place that has all the Chrysler specialty tools, you know the ones called for in the FSM. I was put off about trying to work on some items beacuse they required what looked like a tool I don't have (or could make). Well, I sent Miller Specialty Tools enough email questions, they decided to send me a catalog of their tools. Every tool I looked up that I found in the FSM for doing engine, transmissions, rear-end, whatever were in the catalog! to get out the front pump I use the long bolts, with big sockets to make a slid hamer of sorts. to compress the clutch packs, I used 2 pairs of large C clamp vise grips. I used real visegrips and would not trust the china ones. I know it is not the "right way" but it built my 904 no problem. another tip, only take one clutch pack apart at a time. good luck Phillip
