Post subject:  Got the Dart

Took possession of that red '71 Dart 4-door today. Got a whole shload of extras: FSM, complete detailed handwritten records with many receipts for every bit of work done on the car since its purchase brand new, a car cover, some tune-up parts, the original painted gas cap (it's got a locking one now), and—since the previous owner is moving out of province—an excellent lettuce spinner, a hand blender, a cool old porcelain-over-steel-and-stainless kitchen scale and assorted knicknacks.

The car failed this morning's provincial safety inspection; four of the eight brake shoes (the primaries) are deemed too thin. I could maybe quibble that point a little, but not too much, they're pretty thin. The lower ball joints (or maybe it was the uppers?) are deemed to have too much play. And the left rear wheel cylinder's got a small leak. I face an immediate decision whether to refurbish the 4-wheel 9" drum brakes, or upgrade now to something better. The former option would be fastest. The latter option would cost a great deal more and take a lot of hurry-up shipping (no junkyards here have any A-body parts), unless someone reading this has brake upgrade parts for me, ready to go right this minute ;-) but would wind me up with better brakes. I'm thinking the less-costly path to acceptable results will probably win out this time over the more-costly path to better results, thus buying me plenty of time to figure out the brakes I want to wind up with eventually and collect parts more slowly and economically.

Outside of the safety failures, there are some things that need addressing soon. The exhaust pipework is tired front to back, though not leaking yet.

The Holley 1920 carburetor is original at 142k miles and is showing some operational symptoms that could probably be mostly adjusted out, but I think I will just replace it.

The car has coilover shocks at all four corners. Mmmm...that might not be a right-now fix, but those'll go away. I will probably wind up buying new leaf springs for the car; I'm guessing the coilovers were to compensate for the rear sag that is typical of '70s A-bodies with some years on 'em.

That's about all the "right now or real soon" stuff. There's an endless amount of "would be nice" upgrade-y type stuff, of course, that'll get addressed gradually as long as I own the car.

Oh, and the garage called me to take a look underneath while they had it up in the air. They and I concur: Minimal surface rust only and even the floor looks solid. Sometime in the recent past (must look in the logbook!), most of the steel fuel line from tank to pump was replaced with rubber fuel line hose neatly tie-wrapped at intervals to the tank vent line and to the unibody rails. I'm still trying to decide whether I approve, disapprove or am indifferent on this.

Pics of the car are Here.

Looks to be fairly solid! Is the chrome trim on the lower flanks original?
I have never seen that on any other Darts before.

Are you planning on going to big bolt disc's or going to the small bolt Kelsey-Hayes disc's?
If you go to the K-H disc's the calipers and rotors are expensive!
I found that out the hard way when i put them on my 72 Scamp.

Dan - are there any markings on the rubber line? If its the efi line (r9 or r10) its fine even for the full length of the car imo. If your worried about it you can slide some stainless sheilding over it if you don't want to go as far as replacing it all with steel tube.

That's the scary bit—it is not SAE-marked that I saw. It's been on there long enough without failure that I'm guessing it's more or less to SAE J30R7 (plain ol' carbureted-system hose), and not something totally scary like 30R5 or 30R6.

H'mmmm...ya got me on that r10. My immediate knowledge stops at 30R9, which AFAIK is EFI hose with 900psi burst strength, an all-proof inner liner, and other nice performance and durability characteristics. What's 30R10?

I'm thinking probably stainless replacements for the brake and fuel lines.

R10 - the outside of the hose is rated for gas exposure. They use it for in-tank pump plumbing when the ouside of the hose is immersed in gas as well. Stuff aint cheap though, its about double what r9 usually is.

Not marked at all anywhere is cause for concern - but if its lived under the car without cracking longer then a few months I doubt its r7. Bend it yourself or check the turns for any cracks - if there isn't any its not r7 or below.

If your bending it yourself stainless will be a pain for fuel line sizes.

Looks like you grabbed the last peach off the tree, Dan. anything like that rusted out or turned to pink a long time ago up here ( In case others dont realize this is rust belt and 'crush em' if their older than 12 years old' central, bar none) It couldn't have found a better, SAFER home. Congradulations, it reminds me when I lost getting a 71' swinger w/318 manual, and safetied in that condition for $2100 and that was 15 years ago! AAAARGH the pain is coming back! :P

SnR,

You're going to hate me for what I brought home. A 42,000 mile '67 V100 with a 225, carpet and no other options. Blown up 7 1/4, but no rust. $1000 plus $100 delivery. It even has it's original plug wires!

Image

I then scored a '76 Duster parts car for $200. I had to drag it home myself. This one will donate it's K-member, disc brakes and sway bar to the V100. Not having front suspension under the Duster will make it a bit harder to load on the trailer, but I'll manage.

Y'know, it's shots like those that help re-inforce the 4-door preference.
I'll admit though, It saddens me to see another Dart Custom straighter than mine :D At least mine has the best, bondo-free body I've seen here in Vancouver - too bad it's brown...... Wanna trade?

Reed, the A bodies are out there! Both of my finds have been on Craigslist.

NewSlanter,

We already have an economical 4 door and the kids fit fine in the back of a Dart or Valiant anyway. Growing up my parents had a '73 Honda Civic followed by an '81 Civic 4 door. There was also a VW van very early on and a Ford van that didn't stay too long. As such I used to think my grandparents' Scamp was a big car. They said they bought a 2 door as it was safer for the kids. I think the reasoning was we couldn't fall out of the back doors if there were none.
