Post subject:  Kick down rod length

Hey all I need some input on my kick down adjustment. I put my super six set up on and I am using the k/d rod from the one bbl set and i'm wondering if there is a length difference. it seems to really hold on to second gear and it down shifts into second gear really hard. The trans fluid is good and this problem wasn't there with the 1bbl.

I guess I should ask also where the trans lever should be in relation to the slide position on the carb

Donno for Super Six, but on the 1bbl, the kickdown lever should be fully forward when you're at no throttle and fully to the rear at WOT. When the throttle plate is opened, the linkage should start to move at the same time. Unless you've made modifications to the kickdowm linkage, the 1bbl linkage will not work for a 2bbl set-up.

I'll try to post some pic's but everytime I see a super six set up it looks different then the one I got from a B-100 van. The 1bbl hooks right up with two fat washers on each side to remove play in the linkage.

This behavior is far better than the other way around with soft shifts and no 3rd to second kickdown. Firm shifts are actually better for these transmissions. Soft shifts with lots of overlap will kill an old trans in no time at all.

If it's reving out way too far in second, then you should shorten the rod adjustment a little at a time until it's a little softer, but you should still feel the shift. This ain't no $50,000 luxury car!

This isn't anything more than a starting point. I'd say it's more important to start with the trans lever fully to the rear at wide open throttle and then adjust for softer shifts if required.

well I stopped by a trans shop and asked him what he thought and he said the 1bbl rod angle may cause the set up to not be at 100% but closer to 85-90% which he said it shouldn't be a problem. So I adjusted the rod per his instructions and it seems to be ok (for now). It does not down shift into second gear so hard any more that it wants to put me through the windsheild.

thanks slant6ram for the input I know that hard shifts are much better the the lagging soft ones but on my first adjust it seemed way to hard. I'd rather ask for help on the board and see if someone can help out. The rod seems to be a bit short so untill I can hunt down the right rod I'll keep the adjustment max out. I got a spare rod maybe I'll modify it......

So my trans is working good now but now my carb really needs dialed in. I got a 8 3/4 one legger from a 71 chrysler 300 so thats my next project as soon as my carb problems are smoothed out. Thanks for the help everyone!
