Post subject:  Hose issue

When you do the Disc swap on a 72 Dart how did you deal with the different shape in the hose end where brake hose fits to the frame bracket? The early drum brake has a single flat on the hose and the disc hose has a hex on the hose end.
Did you just open up the hole so the hex would fit ?

I ground the hole out on my 70, but that's kind of a hack way to do it (I was a teenager at the time). I bought some braided steel hoses for my 73 and everything bolted up nicely despite the differences. Plus they aren't really that much more expensive then the replacment rubber hoses.

I used hoses for a Volare in my '64. It took a little careful filing, but they fit and work well with the Volare calipers mounted to the rear, and '74 Duster upper control arms and knuckles.

I'm using the same set up as you. 74 upper control arms and Voare knuckles with calipers to the back. I have the hoses off the Volare and they look to be fairly new. But they do not have the metal bracket some people talk about on them. Do you know if this is to keep the hose away from something? Anybody got a picture?

Here's what I'm running: '64 Valiant, '74 A-body UCA, 10.87" rotors, Volare (slider) calipers and hoses, mounted to the rear. Wheels have 205-60R15 tires on 15X7 rims with 6mm offset. "340" torsion bars, KYB shocks, etc.

Here is the assembly with the steering cranked almost full left:

It didn't take much work to make room for the hose block's indexing tab.

I have seen no signs of interference, rubbing, or any other dangers to the hose. I drive on some pretty rough roads, parallel park, and generally give the suspension a workout.

Thanks for the pictures. My hoses are nothing like yours. Mine has a straight end on the frame side. And the caliper end has about a 2-3" piece of steel tube on just as it leaves the caliper. I did get everything from one car when I got the parts for the swap.

I got the hoses new, from rockauto.com. For an '80 Volare, if I recall.

I just checked Rock auto and the 1980 is just like yours. But a 1976 Volare has the hose like I mentioned with a metal bracket.

Took another look at your pictures and did another search on Rock auto to see the pictures of a 76 Volare and I see that your caliper has the hose coming off the bottom side and the 76 has the hose coming off the top side of the caliper by the bleeder. It appears they changed designs somewhere during the F-Body run.
I'm going to mount mine with hoses that I have and see how all the clearances are. I'll let you know how I make out.

Here is what I found when I mounted everything up.

I put on the F-Body Calipers facing to the rear. My calipers have the hose coming off the top side of the caliper beside the bleeder. With this setup I had tire/wheel interference when the car was turned on a dead lock. I did not see any way to eliminate this. Next I tried a new hose off of the 73-76 A-Body car. This hose is a couple inches shorter, but still had the same problem. It looks like if you want the F-body calipers to the rear, you would want hoses & calipers off of the 1980 Volare like Slantvaliant has.
Since mine were not going to work to the rear I dropped the spindles and switched them side to side, and mounted the calipers to the front. Then I put on the original F-Body hose. No way it will fit. Next I put on the 73-76 A-body hose and it was a perfect fit. Everything is aimed in the right direction and no interference anywhere. I did have to use a small file to file some flats in the hose mounting tab on the frame but that was not too bad.

Here is our Final setup.

72 Dart swinger / 73-76 Upper control arm / 76-? Volare spindles,rotors & Calipers / Calipers facing forward / 73-76 brake hoses.
