Other than original parts, what's the best repair when the e-brake handle breaks off?

Kinda depends on the year and model of the car. '63-'73 A-bodies with the umbrella-handle "pull to apply, twist to release" parking brake can get new reproduction handles, but they can be kind of spendy. Shop around on eBay and elsewhere.

The objection to original parts is...?

It broke too easily. I thought maybe there might be an all metal replacement of some kind.

Um, it's between 3 and 4 decades old.

start looking for a metal handle at a hardware store doesn't have to be 'for the car ' specifically. i dunno use your imagination. half of everything i buy to 'fix' things insn't even intended or designed for that particular purpose but you know what? sometimes its the best fix. Thats why my freinds call me 'McGyver' because I can fix anything with stuff around the house or the hardware section. Look for a metal T-handle in section that has door hardware, hinges, etc and/or a generic handle from the auto/camper/boating section. some rodding magazines have 'cheap' T handles too like MOON, JC Whitney and theres always of course the junkyard.
