This is a little off topic, but my buddy has a 1997 2.5 liter Dodge Dakota that the exhaust manifold is split where it bolts to the exhaust pipe. There appears to be a 1/4" gap (split). I don't know what material it is. How can this be fixed? Welded? Brazed? J-B Weld?

not jb weld.

if its cast iron (i think it is) you can grind a 'V' into the crack and braze it using acetylene and brass. its a delicate operation, but can be done.

Good used exhaust manifolds for that application are cheap and plentiful in wrecking yards. You'll surely spend more time, effort and (probably) money trying to fix the cracked one, than you will just getting an acceptable replacement and installing it.

If you know a professional welder who is used to doing heavy industrial stuff, it shouldn't be hard for them to weld. A cousin of mine welded a cracked manifold for me (with nickel rod and all, I think) and it never cracked again.
