Post subject:  rear wheel axel
hi

is the drivers side rear wheel bearing 'supposed' to move about 1/4 inch in and out?

I removed my rear wheed and found it has this amount of play

is this how it should be or have I got a badly damaged bearing ????

what model axle?? If an 8-3/4, they had an adjustment for end play (took me a while to get the one I transplanted into my 79 D 100 right after a bearing change) if an 8-1/4 or newer 7-1/4 with the bearings pressed into the housing the endplay wouldnt be a bearing, thats play between the end of the axle and the center pin in the diff. one of the quirks of a C clip rear end. The C clip doesn't take up all the clearance.

I have the 7 1/4 read end as was stock with most slant 6 darts of 1967

So do you think the end play is OK/normal?

I am going to have the wheel bearings replaced anyway

i just did my rear axles in my 68 dart 7.25 and they had about 1/4 in play and when i went to the mechanice he said that was the norm.

Aren't the 7 1/4 axles retained by bolt-on flanges, not c-clips?
I don't think there should be any significant endplay, unless the bearing and it's retainer have moved on the axle.
Replacing those bearings is a good idea, but be prepared to possibly buy an axle or two if they are scored.

OK OK end play

I just have end play on the drivers side read

I have got new bearing and seals and found a good mechanic to install.

you have to chillisel off the old retaining ring and press off the old ones and press on the new ones.....

but even the mechanic does not know is 1/4 of play on just one side is 'normal' or not

maybe I will find out more when he gets it appart.

isnt there an adjuster on the drivers side for that?? Not that hard to change, line up the hole in the axle flange with the nuts that hold the backing plate on 1 at a time (9/16" socket/ratchet) and remove once you get them all out the axle oughtta come right out. then take the axles to an automotive machine shop and have them pressed, then reinstall. Chances are the mechanic will need to farm out the press work anyway.

The 7.25 axle in the A-body has a retainer plate that bolts to the end of the axle. The 1/4" of play is not normal. There is no adjustment. Sounds to me, that the outer bearings are extremely worn out. Rplace them ASAP, that plate is the only thing holding the axles in the housing.

That last post is right. It's a sealed ball bearing. I few years ago we drove our 65 dart 270 from southern California to northern Washington. The rear bearings seemed fine but I replaced them and the brakes before the trip anyway. The old bearings had very little play. The odd thing is, the slight knock or rattling noise that I always thought was the trunk hinges went away. I have heard this same noise in several other A bodies and I am now sure it is always the axle bearings. Bearings in this condition could probably go on for years if you just drive around town, but I believe a sustained highway run could have them burned up in a day. There are not expensive and really easy to change, so it might be worth doing before they fail on the road.
