Post subject:  3 spd manual performance

i know, oximoron here. but seriously, im considering a 61 valiant 225/ 3 spd(floor shift-yeah!). it is box stock, my intentions are electronic conversion, 7 1/4 sg(dana style) 4:10 gears, head work(shave for more compression), cam, 4bl(390 holley), header(is there one for a 61?), single 2 1/4 or 2 1/2 exhaust. not looking to run slicks at the track, but would run it now and then for $#!+ and giggles. is the 3 spd an option(i know the big block cars ran them till the 833 4spd came out)...............?? thnx, ss

Post subject:  no, its not a foolish idea...

Howdy,

I have a A745 I took out of my truck...virtually the same gears as in the 833 OD except for the .73 to 1 OD. It was strong with a 3.91 rear end and was pulling 4200 pounds most of time. This is a side loader with a tranny brake that was used in cop cars, taxis, and trucks....very very tough. It needs the heavy iron bell and I used a 11 inch clutch.....the 833 bell won't mate to it though.

Those boxes aren't the strongest in the world, but should hold up for you.

Non-synchro first can be a chore, but good for impressive double-clutching efforts.

Ratio spread isn't the best depending on which gear set you've got. Mine fell into a big hole between 2nd and 3rd.

The Toad's floor-mounted shifter is a terrible, spindly arrangement that has apparently been copied directly into the new Rustang (good enough for them I guess). Unless you enjoy that vague, disconnected feeling...
