OK this may sound lame but here goes. First of all, I am pulling my engine and was trying to unbolts the four bolts that go to the torque converter, but how do you keep the torque converter from spinning while trying to loosen these?

usually i just put a wrench on them and hit it with a hammer or my hand. if that doesn't work get a pry bar or something to wedge in between the ring gear and the bell housing.

The engine is out, thanks for the help.

Did you remember to mark one ear of the flexplate to the converter? All 4 bolts will only go back in one way.

I did, but a new engine is going in. Will this be a problem getting the new engine lined up?

Naw not a problem, you'll just have to guess and check put one bolt in and spin the engine around to make sure the other 3 line up before you put them in. If they are off, remove the one bolt, turn the converter 90 degrees with flexplate held still, then try again.

Or before mounting the flexplate to the crank you can line it up on the converter and mark it.

One tip I remember reading on the board - when installing the converter make sure its fully seated into the transmission, but when bolting it back up to the flexplate with the engine installed, curl your fingers under the converter and bring it forward. Don't let the bolts pull the flexplate towards the converter.

I bought a tool for a few bucks from Harbor Freight that makes some of this easier. It grips the teeth on the ring gear.
