I just recently recieved a free 7 1/4 sure grip with big bolt pattern from a 75 Dart Sport and am thinking that this would be a great rear for my 60 Valiant with a HyperPak and 4spd o/d trans but after i opened up the cover I found that there was only 2.76 gears and I would really like 3.55 or 3.91 gears. Are gear sets for the 7 1/4 hard to find or install and are the Suregrps from the 70's a good unit? I would like to also replace the axle bearings and seals ,do they make the Green bearings for the 7 1/4 or Im i stuck with the adjuster?

No. The 7¼" rear axle was used up through 1998 (base rear for Dakota pickups). P/N 4411 971, for example, is a brand-new 3.55 ring and pinion package. 3.91's weren't used in the late truck applications, but I'm pretty sure you could scare up a set of 3.91s for a 7¼" without too much effort.
If in good condition, they're fine.
The Green-style bearings are not better! The factory-type bearings are the superior units, and the adjustor is a good thing, not a bad thing.

Thanks Dan,so could i go to my local parts store or dealer and get a r-n-p for a 96 Dakota with an install kit and every thing be fine?
I realize that the Green bearings are not as good but I had an adjuster that wouldnt stay adjusted on a an 8 3/4 once and it was a royal pain in the rear and at the time couldnt find a new adjuster and had the green bearings installed.

Not a parts store, that is a dealer item.
I had a slant-6 Valiant once that wouldn't start. That doesn't mean I decided to quit driving slant-6 Valiants. You had a faulty adjustor...OK, build up your rear axle with a non-faulty adjustor and you'll be A-OK.

No, actually, a lot of parts stores can get you an aftermarket ring and pinion set. Not sure about prices, but I'm willing to bet they could beat the dealer. Summit, jegs, and the like are also decent sources for such things.

I'd be surprised if any of the aftermarketers bothers with 7¼" ring and pinion sets...

I stopped by O'Reillys this afternoon and they can get a 3.91 for a 7 1/4 for $208 and a master install kit wiyh timken bearings for $80.Im gonna check with Randy's and see what he has got to offer.Thanks for all of the replys.

The 7 1/4 SG came as clutch and and later, as cone style unit, you should open it up and check the friction area for possible wear.

I thought that all 7 1/4's had ball bearing type axle bearings, not the adjustable (tapered roller) type bearing found in the 8 3/4. Check to see if there is an adjuster, I don't think it has one.

Your probably right Doug,as Im not too familiar with the 7 1/4 axle but I will pull the axles tomorrow to find out.
