I just traded a super six setup to friend for a complete turbo setup (turbo,exaustmanifold,popoff valve,all the ducting and intercooler) from a 87 Volvo 740 GLE WITH A 2.4 engine.The engine ran well but the car got rear ended and my freind decided to get his 68 a100 on the road rather than fix the Volvo. The turbo is a Garret and I thought it would be sized right for a 170 cubic inch slant. My thoughts are as follows;

1) stock 170 cube engine(rebuilt with 8 to 1 cr)

2) 6-8 pounds of boost

3) super six intake with 2 bbl carb.....suggestions welcome

4) MSD ignition with boost control

I realize that this will require thought and planning and may not even be feasable, that is why Im asking for advice. Also I know that the Volvo mounted the turbo on the right side while the slant will have have it on the left side, canthe snail be rotated or can I run it with the exaust coming out the front and turning back under the turbo? I also have all of the oil lines, where would I tap to get oil for the turbo, would tapping at sending unit provide enough pressure for the turbo? Also,as noted I would like to run a carb as opposed to efi as I dont want to fight too many demons at one time but would like to upgrade at a later if this project comes to fruitation. Also what are some recomendations on a fuel system.

I do not plan on doing this to a running car but rather find an engine and build the setup in cunjunction with each other and then drop in my 63 Dart 170 4dr and have spirited little ride. I know this can be done but is a good idea or should I keep looking for a different turbo?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I say go for it.

Your turbo is going to spin backwards to mine and Rob64GT's (first post), so I would suggest either using a J-pipe setup (leave the exhaust manifold alone and make a 180 degree pipe to mount your turbo where you want), or mount it similar to Rob64GT's but with the outlet flange pointed down something like 45 degrees. Yes the housing can be rotated, but it wont solve the problem.

I wish Andrew Wagner were still around as he had a Ford Turbocoupe turbo on his, so he would have had to deal with the same questions.

Oil and water are no problem. Tee into your coolant lines (if the turbo is water cooled) and get pressurized oil with a tee under the oil pressure sending unit. Return the oil through a large line into the side of the oil pan (above the oil level).

2 barrel can work, read the last post above.

I will try and get a couple of picture posted later today of a Barracuda /6 using a Grand Nation turbo. He used the J-pipe style. Might give you some ideas to think about.

DionR,Thanks for the advice and support, but I have a few questions.

Are you saying to leave the turbo in its natural position as on the Volvo and then run a j-pipe from the manifold to the turbo? Also what about boost referencing the fuel pump? I would also like to use the intercooler but can I do this without it as the Barracuda in your pictures has done?Should the j-pipe be made of stainless steel? I was planning on using a aluminum super six intake with a Carter bbd but would a Holley 390 4bbl be a better setup and what mods should be made to it?

I know I have asked alot of questions and I know Ill ask alot more but you seem like you have experience in this field and I really need experience for this project.
Thanks for your help.

The J-pipe setup allows you to mount the turbo just about any were you want, plus it saves you the work of modding an exhaust manifold. The above Barracuda used a J-pipe. Charlie_S (?) used a J-pipe on his turbo 170. I will try and find a link.

Yep, forgot that. Somehow you need to increase fuel pressure as boost increases, or the boost will keep fuel from filling the fuel bowls.

All depends on the boost you want to run. In theory you don't need an intercooler at 8 pis, but I had an '86 4 dr LeBaron turbo w/o an intercooler that would rattle on hills, and it only ran 8 psi. If it were me, and I had an intercooler, I would run it.

Should the j-pipe be made of stainless steel?
Not a clue. Never built one. My guess is that a heavy gauge pipe would last fine, but stainless would last longer. That's just my opinion, though.

The last thread I linked in my first post in this thread has a bit of discussion on that. I think a 4 bbl is going to be easier to made work well in all situations, but I am going to try a 2 bbl first. Like I said in the thread above, I know a holley 2 bbl can be made to work as the 11 second inline six Falcon in Car Craft proved. Problem with that setup is that it is more drag car than street car, and when they do drive it on the street they just deal with it running rich. The trick is making the carb flow enough fuel under boost to live and make power, but keep it from flowing too much fuel when not under boost.

Maybe opposite would be a better word. My turbo spins counterclockwise, if you look at the turbine housing. Most turbos that I've seen that mount on the passenger side of the motor spin clockwise. If you look at the pictures in the first thread linked above, the turbine inlet is high up on the turbo and mounts nicely under the intake. If yours spins clockwise, the inlet would be low on the turbo and would make the turbo occupy the same space as the intake. You can make it work, but the outlet from the exhaust manifold would have to have some kind of a bend in it.

Na, I've just accumulated lots of bits of info from other people's experience. Messed with FWD turbo stuff for some time, but this is my first attempt at retrofitting a turbo.

I'm more than willing to help, but I'm not going to try and pass myself off as some expert.

I just set up a turbo on my slant six truck. Still fine tunning things. Left the exhaust manifold stock, ran a J pipe to the turbo. works great.
